INTRODUCTION

SELF-EXPLAINIG ROADS   description of the the self-explaining roads the possibility of their establishment in the Republic of Slovenia FORGIVING ROADS  Forgiving roads are planned, designed and executed in such a way as to prevent ' mistakes of traffic users or lessen traffic accidents consequences.

SUSTAINABLE TRAFFIC SAFETY

 Human beings are in the center of the traffic safety GENERAL PRINCIPLES:  Functionality of roads  Homogeneity of traffic load, speed, and direction  Forgiving roadside  Predictability and recognizable road design  State of awareness by the road users

SUSTAINABLE TRAFFIC SAFETY

SELF EXPLAINIG ROADS SUSTAINABLE TRAFFIC SAFETY FORGIVING ROADS

SELF-EXPLAINIG ROADS

 Theeuwes, J & Godthelp, H, 1992  Netherland, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand  more than half a million web sites contains the term "self-explaining roads“

SELF-EXPLAINIG ROADS

DEFINITION:  The self-explaining roads are roads which simply by design induce traffic safe behaviour of all traffic users.

THE KEY TERMS:  categorisation and perception and consequentially, the expectations of the traffic users

IMPLEMENTACIJA SELF-EXPLAINING ROADS ROAD CATEGORISATION - Homogeneous within one category, - Heterogeneous between different categories.

RECOGNIZABILE LAYOUT EXPECTATIONS REGARDING:

own behaviour:

maximum permitted speed, - perception of safe behaviour, - permitted manoeuvres;

others' behaviour:

- types of road users - maximum permitted speed, - permitted manoeuvres.

HOMOGENIOUS AND PREDICTABLE BEHAVIOUR REDUCING THE NUMBER OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AND IMPROVING TRAFFIC SAFETY

ANALYSIS OF THE EXISTING CATEGORISATION OF ROADS IN SLOVENIA  motorways are generally built according to SER principles  the national and local road network is not built according to SER principles

PROPOSAL FOR ESTABLISHMENT SER IN SLOVENIA       road categories need to be re-classified according to SER principles The traffic model of the entire road system needs to be prepared the maximum travel time to the motorway network from every location in the RS needs to be set (tp < 45 min) credible speed limits, typical cross-sections and typical elements for road categories must be set a system for continuous education about road safety behaviour needs to be established it is necessary to standardise SER measures at crossings, cerves, crossroads, road sections and in built-up areas

THE RESULT OF IMPLEMENTATION SER PRINCIPLES  safe and calm driving on road network through road distributor road access road

Discussion

As we can see the establishment of self – explainihg road network in a long and very complex process.

Therefore it is necessary:  to get general consensus of experts and  more important social and political agreement of development of transport in RS
