Action Verbs
 An action verb indicates the action of a
person or thing. The action can visible or
mental.
 Some verbs indicate mental actions. These
actions cannot be seen or heard directly.
They are thinking activities, but are still
actions.
 Complete page. 29 as a class. Read the
paragraph and underline the action verb in
each sentence.

 A comparison using like or as
 His feet were as big as boats.
Simile Examples
They fought like cats and dogs.
He was as brave as a lion.
She laughs like a hyena.
The world is like a stage.
Simile Example Poem: Hockey
Hockey is like reading
You get into it and then you never want to stop
You feel like you're in a different world.
Hockey is like school
You have to do your work and
you have to practice or you will get an "F“.
Hockey is like math
You get stronger and before you know it
You're getting an "A“ Your scoring goals

Metaphor
 A metaphor states
that one thing is
something else. It is a
comparison, but it
does NOT use like or
as to make the
comparison.
 Her hair is silk.

Her bubbly personality cheered him up.

She got a glowing report from the teacher.

 The baby was like an octopus, grabbing at
all the cans on the grocery store shelves.
 As the teacher entered the room she
muttered under her breath, "This class is like
a three-ring circus!"
 The giant’s steps were thunder as he ran
toward Jack.
 The pillow was a cloud when I put my head
upon it after a long day.

in a room full of rocking chairs.
