GOOD WRITING STARTS WITH GOOD READING!
As you read the Lesson, ask yourself questions:
What do I already know about this?
What is the main idea about this topic / paragraph
What does this mean?
Do I understand what the text is talking about?
What does this remind me of? Where have I seen this before?
What will happen, or be discussed next?
Taking Notes as you Read

Sample Letter to the Editor
Dear John Smith, editor of the Spectator,
My name is Ling Chen. I am a 17-year-old high school senior. I am writing this
letter in the hopes of shedding some light on the very debatable topic of nature
versus nurture.
I believe that children who have parents that are athletic tend to be athletic as
well. I believe that we are what we are based upon the way in which we were
made. I agree with the theory of nature as this theory goes along with the way
in which I feel about genetic tendency. Our genetics are determined by
parents. If a parent excels at something, their children are going to excel as
well.
The theory of nature versus nurture is a very debatable, often arguable topic.
It is my hope that readers will see my story and not discredit nature. Let’s face
it; we would never be here without our parents!
Respectfully submitted,
Linh Chen
