Passover
Messianic Significance
Passover - Messianic
Significance
• How did Yeshua fulfill this Feast?
Yeshua, the Passover Lamb
John (Yochanan):
• The next day he saw Jesus
coming to him and said, "Behold,
the Lamb of God who takes
away the sin of the world!
John 1:29
• John combined the concepts
of Pesach with the Yom
Kippur. Passover didn’t take
away any sin, Yom Kippur
did!
1 Peter 1:19-20
• "But with the precious
blood of Messiah, as of a
lamb without blemish and
without spot. He indeed
was foreordained before
the foundation of the
world, but was manifest
in these last times for
you"
Yeshua Fulfilled TANAKH
•
25
And He said to them, "O
foolish men and slow of heart
to believe in all that the
prophets have spoken! 26
"Was it not necessary for the
Christ to suffer these things
and to enter into His glory?"
27 Then beginning with Moses
and with all the prophets, He
explained to them the things
concerning Himself in all the
Scriptures…
– Luke 24
Yeshua Fulfilled TANAKH

44
Now He said to them, "These are
My words which I spoke to you
while I was still with you, that all
things which are written about Me
in the Law of Moses and the
Prophets and the Psalms must be
fulfilled." 45 Then He opened their
minds to understand the Scriptures,
46 and He said to them, "Thus it is
written, that the Christ would suffer
and rise again from the dead the
third day, 47 and that repentance for
forgiveness of sins would be
proclaimed in His name to all the
nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
Luke 24
Matthew 5:17-18
• "Do not think that I came to
destroy the Torah or the
Prophets. I did not come to
destroy but to fulfill. For
assuredly, I say to you, till
heaven and earth pass
away, one jot or one tittle
will by no means pass from
the Torah till all is fulfilled.”
The Passover Lamb – Exodus

"Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying,
`On the tenth of this month they are each one to
take a lamb for themselves, according to their
fathers' households, a lamb for each
household… 5 `Your lamb shall be an
unblemished male a year old; you may take it
from the sheep or from the goats. 6 `You shall
keep it until the fourteenth day of the same
month, then the whole assembly of the
congregation of Israel is to kill it at twilight.
Lamb without Blemish
• On the tenth (today) of Nisan the priests
carried the lambs for the Passover
sacrifices into the Temple, as commanded
by God (see Ex. 12:3). The lambs were
then examined for four days and if no
blemish or defect could be found, they
qualified for the sacrifice and were killed
on the fourteenth (Wednesday).
Yeshua’s Fulfillment of the
Lamb
• Yeshua the Lamb went up to Jerusalem on the
tenth of Nisan, and for four days was questioned
and examined by the chief priests, elders,
Pharisees, and Sadducees. However, He always
left them speechless, because they could find no
fault with His impeccable logic and character
(Matthew 21:23-27; 22:23-46 and in the end no
fault could be found in Him by the highest
authority in the land (ref. Luke 23:4,14; John
18:38, 19:4,6).
The Perfect Sacrifice
• Therefore, He was the perfect, complete
and qualified sacrifice.
Lambs Killed at Twilight
• He was slaughtered with all the other
lambs that same day at 3:00 p.m. on the
14th of Nisan (Wednesday).
Yeshua Dies at Same Time
Matthew 27
•
46
About the ninth hour (3 p.m.) Jesus cried out with a
loud voice, saying, "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?"
that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU
FORSAKEN ME?" 47 And some of those who were
standing there, when they heard it, began saying, "This
man is calling for Elijah." 48 Immediately one of them ran,
and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it
on a reed, and gave Him a drink. 49 But the rest of them
said, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him."
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and
yielded up His spirit.
Day of Preparation for the
Shabbat
• “Then the Jews, because it was the day of
preparation, so that the bodies would not
remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for
that Sabbath was a high day), asked
Pilate that their legs might be broken, and
{that} they might be taken away.”
– John 19:31
For the Passover Shabbat – NOT
the Weekly Shabbat
• “Now it was the day of preparation for the
Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And
he said to the Jews, "Behold, your King!"
John 19:14
The Shabbat of
Passover/Unleavened Bread could
fall on any Night of the week!
• Does not have to be on a Friday night!
• This year, it is Monday night!
• Last year, it was Wednesday night!
Yeshua could NOT have been
killed on a Friday!
• There IS NO Good Friday!
• WHY NOT???
Three Days AND Three Nights
• “…for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND
THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA
MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three
days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”
Matthew 12:40
Need Some Math Skills Here!
• How many days did Yeshua say He would
be in the earth?
• How many nights did Yeshua say He
would be in the earth?
Now…If Yeshua were Crucified on
“Good” Friday:
• Count how many days it was from Friday
to Sunday!
• Now, count how many nights it was from
Friday to Sunday!
Friday Crucifixion
• From Friday to Saturday you have two nights:
Friday night and Saturday night. You do not
even have a partial night on Sunday, since He
arose BEFORE dawn on Sunday morning.
Do You Get…
• 3 days AND three nights???
• If you count a part of Friday and Sunday as
complete days, then you have Friday,
Saturday and Sunday.
• So you can “fudge” it and call it three days
from Friday to Sunday!
But you can NEVER
• Get three days and three nights from a
“Good” Friday death to the Resurrection!
This is NOT Nitpicking Scripture!
• A sign HAS TO be complete in its
fulfillment, or it is NOT a valid sign!
• “Good” Friday does NOT work!
When the Church walked away
from its Jewish roots
• …it lost the correct understanding of the
other Sabbaths found in the Torah
(Leviticus 23).
• If you get rid of the Authority of the
Foundation (Old Testament), you can
make the New Testament say anything!
So, Let’s Count BACKWARD from
the THIRD Day!
• We KNOW from Scripture when He
rose! He rose on the 1st Day of the
Week!
ALL Hebrew Days of Week are
NUMBERED, except the 7th Day
Shabbat!
• “Now after the Sabbath (7th Day), as it
began to dawn toward the first {day} of the
week, Mary Magdalene and the other
Mary came to look at the grave.”
Matthew 28:1
1st Day of the Week
• The first day of the Week begins at
sundown on Saturday evening (after
Shabbat)
Yeshua Rose Sometime BEFORE
Dawn on 1st Day of the Week!
“But on the first day of the week, at early
dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the
spices which they had prepared.”
Luke 24:1
Count Backwards: Yeshua rises!
• 1st Day of the Week: Begins Saturday Night
• After Sundown
Count Backwards: Third Day
• Shabbat Day – “Saturday”
Count Backwards: Third Night
• Shabbat (7th Day) – Friday after Sundown
Count Backwards: Second Day
• Friday
Count Backwards: Second
Night
• Thursday – after Sundown
Count Backwards: First Day
• Thursday
Count Backwards: First Night
• Wednesday – after Sundown
Yeshua Killed on Wednesday
Day
• Yeshua was killed at twilight on
Wednesday, 14 Nisan! Fulfilling the
Passover lamb Scriptures of the Torah!
• He was put in the earth just before the
Sabbath (not the weekly seventh-day
Sabbath! Rather, the Sabbath of
Passover/Unleavened Bread)!
Yeshua’s Sign
• Needs to Fulfill 3 Days AND 3 Nights!
“…for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE
NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will
the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the
heart of the earth.”
Matthew 12:40
He Rose again on Firstfruits!
• Another Moed listed in Leviticus 23:9-14!
• We talked about that last Shabbat!
Another Question:
• When did Yeshua Celebrate His
Passover with His Talmidim?
• If Yeshua died when the Passover
lambs were slaughtered as we said,
how was it that He celebrated
Passover with His Disciples the night
before He was killed?
When did Yeshua Celebrate His
Passover with His Talmidim?
• Clues from Scripture – Luke 22
Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on
which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 And
Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare
the Passover for us, so that we may eat it." 9 They
said to Him, "Where do You want us to prepare it?" 10
And He said to them, "When you have entered the
city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water;
follow him into the house that he enters.

Water Carrying – Women’s Work!
• Genesis 24:11-20 – Rivkah.
• John 4:7 – Yeshua and the Samaritan
woman at the well.
• Still that way in some parts of the Middle
East today!
Men did not draw water! Except ONE
group of men – the Essenes!
Only Essenes did NOT have
Women
• “By the western shores [of the Dead Sea],
but away from their harmful effects, live a
solitary people, the Essenes, wonderful
besides all others in the world, being
without any women and renouncing all
sexual desire, having no money, and with
only palm trees as companions.”
Pliny the Elder,
Natural History 5:18:73
Community Property
• The Essene sect also did not hold property
in the community as “private” property. All
within the community had access to use
the property of the community.
Essenes held all things in
common with one another.
• “When they enter the sect, they must
surrender all of their money and
possessions into the common fund, to be
put at the disposal of everyone; one single
property for the whole group.”
Flavius Josephus
Luke 22
11
"And you shall say to the owner of the
house, `The Teacher says to you, "Where
is the guest room in which I may eat the
Passover with My disciples?"' 12 "And he
will show you a large, furnished upper
room; prepare it there." 13 And they left
and found everything just as He had told
them; and they prepared the Passover.
Jerusalem Communities
• Essenes, besides Qumran, had communities in
cities, such as Jerusalem.
Evidence that Essenes lived not only at Qumran, near the caves
where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, but also in Jerusalem
comes from several sources, including the scrolls themselves
(assuming the scrolls constitute an Essene library). The famous
War Scroll, which describes an apocalyptic battle between the
forces of light and the forces of darkness, refers to the sounding of
trumpets when the victorious forces of light "return from battle
against the enemy when they journey to the congregation (or
community [ha-edah]) in Jerusalem.“
Jerusalem’s Essene Gateway Where the Community Lived in
Jesus' Time, BARGIL PIXNER, Biblical Archaeological Review,

The Essenes Celebrated
Passover
on a Different Time-table
• Essenes celebrated their Passover the
day before the Temple (and the rest of
Israel) did!
Yeshua celebrated His Passover
• At the same time that the Essene
community celebrated its’ Passover – the
night BEFORE the rest of the Jewish
community celebrated theirs!
Yeshua Celebrated a Valid
Passover
• With His Disciples and was STILL able to
be offered up as a sacrifice the next day,
as the Passover lambs were killed in the
Temple!
New Testament Scripture
• Makes more sense in the light of its’
Hebraic roots!
• If we take away the Hebraic understanding
of the New Testament, we lose the
meaning of what God is really telling us in
His Word!
• We in the Body of Messiah need to get
back to the Hebrew roots of our faith and
not be content with “tradition.”
