Freddy Merkjuri (a real name of
Farruh Bulsara) was born on
the island of Zanzibar in a
family of parsov Bomu and
Dzher Bulsara on September,
5th, 1946. At birth the boy was
given a name "Farruh" that
means “happy”. Farah's father
worked as a cashier at the
Supreme court of England and
Wales. In 1952 Freddy’s sister
Kashmir was born.
In 1954 his parents sent Farruha to St. Peter's school in Panchgan 500 kilometers from Bombay.
There Freddy lived with his grandfather and his aunt. The name of Farruh was inconvenient for his
schoolmates (mainly English-speaking) to pronounce, therefore friends began to call him Freddy.
All kinds of sport at St. Peter's school were typically British. Freddi liked cricket but he didn’t like
to participate in long distance races. He was also fond of hockey, sprint and boxing. In ten years he
became the champion of school in table tennis, in twelve years he received a cup of victory in the
youth all-round contest which also received a reward «for success in all sciences and arts».
Freddy studied well, showed interest in
music and painting, constantly did
drawings for friends and relatives. He
also sang in the school chorus and
participated in school performances.
Since early years Freddy was
interested in music. Singing occupied
almost all his free time. The principal of
St. Peter's school paid attention to his
musical talent. He wrote a letter to the
boy’s parents in which he offered to
give piano classes for Freddy for a
small payment. His parents agreed, and
Freddy started to study and did it very
well. As a result he received the fourth
degree in the musical theory and
practice (English Piano Grade IV).
In 1958 five friends from St. Peter's
school — Freddy Bulsara, Derek Brash,
Bruce Majored, Faring Iran and Victor
Rona organized the first rock group
which they named The Hectic (“Nectar").
In May, 1966, having finished Alvord
school with a high degree in painting,
Freddy gave the interview at the art
college of Eagling in London where he
started to study graphic illustrations in
the autumn of the same year.
The group gave concerts on August, 23rd at
the theatre "Octagon" and on August, 25th
in Royal park. Ibex performed the coverversions of the songs recorded by the group
of Cream, Jimmy Hendrix and Led Zeppelin
who were Freddy’s favorites. In SeptemberOctober, 1969 Freddy suggested to rename
the group into Wreckage. Soon the group
was left by Miffed, and his place was taken
by Richard Thompson, the ex-drummer of
the group «1984» where Bryan Mej had
played. After having been renamed, the new
group Wreckage played a few concerts, but
soon, as Mike Bergin returned to Liverpool
to continue his studies, the group broke up.
Freddy decided to find a new group.
Looking through the announcements in the
Melody Maker, he found a vacancy of a
vocalist for the group «Sour Milk Sea».
In 1979 Freddy‘s old dream came
true — he joined the Royal ballet.
For performances he chose the
songs Bohemian Rhapsody and
Crazy Little Thing Called Love. In
1980 Freddy changed his image —he
had his hair cut and grew
moustaches. At the end of 1982 the
group Queen cancelled the tours
planned for 1983 as they took
holidays.
At the beginning of 1983 they started
recording new albums in the studio
of Musicland Studios in Munich. At
this time he got the acquainted with
composer Dzhordzho Mesoderm who
with "the Metropolis" participated in
the project of restoration of a mute
sci-fi movie of Frits Lang.
On September, 10th, 1984 the song
«Love Kills» came out as a result of
teamwork of Merkjuri and Murder. At
the end of May, 1983 Freddy Merkjuri
attended Verdi's opera "Masquerade“
and heard the outstanding Spanish
opera singer Montserrat Kabala for
the first time. The first single of the
next solo album of Merkjuri Mr. Bad
Guy was a song «I Was Born To Love
You», recorded on April, 9th, 1985.
The album was released in three
weeks by the company CBS Records.
Subsequently, one of the songs of
this album «Made In Heaven» was
included in the album with the same
name which was released by the
Queen in 1995. On the 23rd of
February, 1987 Freddy Merkjuri
recorded a song «The Great
Pretender».
On November, 24th, at about seven o'clock in the evening Freddy Merkjuri died
in his house in London. Thousands of people came to the fence of his house in
Garden Lodge to put bunches of flowers, cards, letters and photos right on the
road.
