Passion vs. Purpose

1 Samuel 1-2

1 Samuel 1:1-4

• 1Sam. 1:1 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the mountains of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 And he had two wives: the name of one was Hannah , and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. 3 This man went up from his city yearly to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. Also the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas , the priests of the LORD, were there.

Hophni & Phinehas

• 1Sam. 2:12 Now the sons of Eli were corrupt ; they did not know the LORD . 13 And the priests’ custom with the people was that when any man offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fleshhook in his hand while the meat was boiling. 14 Then he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; and the priest would take for himself all that the fleshhook brought up. So they did in Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. 15 Also, before they burned the fat, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat for roasting to the priest, for he will not take boiled meat from you, but raw.”

Hophni & Phinehas

• 1Sam. 2:16 And if the man said to him, “They should really burn the fat first; then you may take as much as your heart desires,” he would then answer him, “No, but you must give it now; and if not, I will take it by force.” • 1Sam. 2:17 Therefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD , for men abhorred the offering of the LORD .

God’s Will

• Lev. 7:31 And the priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’.

Hophni & Phinehas

• Corrupt • Did not know the LORD • Their sin was very great before the LORD • Men abhorred the offering of the LORD

Corrupt, Belial

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what CONCORD hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? (2 Corinthians 6:14-15)

Corrupt, Belial

...men loose in their actions, and vicious and scandalous in their habits.

Did Not Know the Lord

James 2:19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe —and tremble! Titus 1:16 They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.

Did Not Know the Lord

1John 2:3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.

Their Sin Was Great Before the Lord

WHY?

• Actions contrary to role • Priests of God • Administer sacrifices for people • Purpose was selfish, greedy Sacrifice was God’s • For the people to honor God • Their actions made sacrifices common • People abhorred the offering of God

Men abhorred the offering of the LORD

1. To shrink back with shuddering from; to regard with horror or detestation; to feel excessive repugnance toward; to detest to extremity; to loathe.

Men abhorred the offering of the LORD

Heb. 10:29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

Hophni & Phinehas

• 1Sam. 2:22 Now Eli was very old; and he heard everything his sons did to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 23 So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all the people. 24 No, my sons! For it is not a good report that I hear. You make the LORD’S people transgress . 25 If one man sins against another, God will judge him. But if a man sins against the LORD, who will intercede for him?” Nevertheless they did not heed the voice of their father, because the LORD desired to kill them.

Hophni & Phinehas

• 1Sam. 2:27 And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house? 28 And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel? 29 Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering , which I have commanded in my habitation ; and honourest thy sons above me , to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?

Hophni & Phinehas

• 1Sam. 2: 30 Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 31 Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house. 32 And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.

Hophni & Phinehas

• 1Sam. 2: 33 And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age. 34 And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.

• • • Jimmy Swaggart Sex scandals • In 1988 Swaggart resigned from his ministry after pictures were taken of him with prostitute Debra Murphree. He issued a lengthy on-air apology for his actions.[6] • The photographs had been taken as a result of a rivalry with fellow TV Evangelist Marvin Gorman, who had been defrocked shortly after being accused of "immoral dalliances" by Swaggart.[7] In 1991 he faced controversy again when it was alleged that he was stopped by police in a car with prostitute Rosemary Garcia.[8]

• • Robert Tilton In 1991, Diane Sawyer and ABC News conducted an investigation of Tilton (as well as two other Dallas area televangelists, W.V. Grant and Larry Lea). The investigation, spearheaded by Trinity Foundation president Ole Anthony and broadcast on ABC's Primetime Live on November 21, 1991, found that Tilton's ministry threw away prayer requests without reading them, keeping only any money or valuables sent to them by viewers, garnering his ministry an estimated US $80 million a year.

• • Ananias & Sapphira Acts 5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. 2 And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.” 5 Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things. 6 And the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him.

• • Simon the Sorcerer Acts 8:18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! 21 You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.”

Hophni & Phinehas

• The problem with Hophni and Phinehas is that they were defining their purpose and their roles.

Hophni & Phinehas

• Who is defining your role or purpose?

• What about people who define their service for personal reasons.

• Insurance salesperson • Social person • Amway • Parents, grand-parents

Hannah

• 1Sam. 1: 4 And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions: 5 But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb . 6 And her adversary also provoked her sore , for to make her fret , because the LORD had shut up her womb. 7 And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her ; therefore she wept , and did not eat . 8 Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?

Hannah

• 1Sam. 1:9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD. 10 And she was in bitterness of soul , and prayed unto the LORD , and wept sore . 11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head. 12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.

Hannah

• 13 Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken. 14 And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee. 15 And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD. 16 Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto. 17 Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

Hannah

• 18 And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way , and did eat , and her countenance was no more sad . 19 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

Hannah

• The problem with Hanna is that she was defining her purpose and her role.

Hanna

• • What did she do?

• • She Prayed Unto the Lord Vowed a vow She Went Her Own Way • • She Ate Her Countenance Was Sad No More

• What is your spiritual purpose?
