What is industrialization?
A change in production from hand
craftmanship to machine
manufacturing.
 By 1900, the US ranked #1 for
industrial goods.
 Why?

The beginnings of our Industrial
Revolution
Reasons for US growth
Abundant supply of natural resources
 Improved transportation
 Government support for business
 A growing urban population
 Opening of international markets
 Increased labor supply through
immigrants

Coal beds
Deposits of coal were used initially for heating
and then to drive engines
Coal miners circa 1900
“Black gold” and natural gas
The need for oil
It took the usage of a steam engine
to extract it
 Cleveland and Pittsburgh, later Texas
 Petroleum into kerosene, later
gasoline!

