• You might use the word heat to mean how warm
something is.
• In science, heat is energy that moves from
warmer objects to cooler objects.

Sharing the Warmth
• Temperature is the measure of how hot or cold
something is.
• Temperature is measured in degrees.
• Heat always moves from an object with a higher
temperature to one with a lower temperature.

Turn Up the Heat
• When you cook food in a pot, heat moves from
the flame to the pot. Then, it moves to the food.
• In an oven, heat moves from the oven, to the air,
and then to the food.
• Some things, such as oven mitts, slow the
movement of heat.

Hot Light
• Heat and light are forms of energy.
• Many objects that give off light also give off heat.
• Objects that give off both heat and light include
lightbulbs, toaster coils, hot lava, the sun,
charcoal, and burning candles.

Burn Rubber
• When two things rub against each other, there is
friction where they touch.
• Friction produces heat.
• The faster and harder the two things rub, the
more heat is produced.
