Make a 3 flap vertical foldable
Take a red piece of paper and cut it out like the
image below; repeat with orange and yellow,
making each one slightly smaller
Glue the yellow on the orange and the orange
on the red; glue the red to the bottom flap
Take a white sheet of paper, cut it in the following
shape, and color the middle blue like below
Glue the white/blue onto the middle flap
Take a small piece of green paper, cut it
approximately 1” wide and fold it accordion style
• Glue it onto the top flap, over the top of the white/blue paper
On page 23 in your ISN answer the following
• What did you just make and what does it have to do with what we are
studying?
On the inside of your fire flap:
• Early factories relied on power from horses, oxen, and water mills
• So most factories had to be located near water sources
• Factories grew—required more, more power. H20 no longer
sufficient
• Enter the steam engine
On the inside of the white/blue flap
• Original steam engine was used to pump water out of flooded mines
and required huge amounts of energy (1698)
• 1763 James Watt interested in Newcomer engine where a piston in a
cylinder worked as a pump by expanding/condensing steam
• Watt was a brilliant inventor but a horrible businessman; hated any
disputes or negotiations
• His partner, Matthew Boulton, organized the sale and distribution of
Watt’s Steam Engine, which allowed the steam engine to be widely
used in factories
Inside the top flap
• Steam engine operates on the principle that the force of steam moves
from areas of high to low pressure thus creating power
• H2O heated by coal—in a container that was sealed except for the
pump
• Steam likes low pressure, so it escapes the high pressure of the
container through the pump, forcing the cylinders onto rotating
turners=power
• Revolutionary invention—steam power used anywhere coal was
available—factories were built anywhere—mines no longer flooded—
metals fueled other industries
