Major Grievances After World War One

   Reparations – The Treaty of Versailles mandated that Germany owed $33 billion to Britain and France which it could not pay.

Territorial losses – There was a desire by Germany, Italy, and the USSR to regain lost territory resulting from the Treaty of Versailles.

Economic Collapse – The economies of Europe were devastated by the war. American economic isolationism, and the Great Depression only made things worse. It led the people of Germany and Italy to begin to support radical groups.

Finland goes to war against the USSR in 1939-40.

Canada’s Role in WW2

   From a population of only 11.5 million, slightly more than one million Canadians served in uniform during the conflict.

Overseas, following the tragedies of Hong Kong and Dieppe, Canada’s army distinguished itself in Sicily, Italy, and the invasion and campaign in Normandy.

These military contributions helped win the war, but the cost was high: more than 42,000 Canadians lost their lives, and another 55,000 were wounded.

  

Benito Mussolini

Born July 29, 1883 to a Socialist family in Italy.

– Was originally a schoolmaster and an editor for a socialist newspaper.

Started World War 1 as a pacifist believing only a class war would be necessary.

– Later, he changed his views and joined the Fascisti, a militant right-wing group. When anarchy struck Italy after WW1, he and his party were invited by the Italian King to form a government in 1922.

The Fascist regime took over all aspects of Italian life and tried creating a new “Roman Empire.” – This culminated with his brutal invasion of Abyssinia in 1935, which drew condemnation from the League of Nations, and prompted Italy’s withdrawal from the League.
