Challenges for
Satellite Applications
The industrial community identified two “valleys of
death” where good ideas fail to become commercial
successes:
• “Failure to industrialise” Technologies where high
entry barriers make demonstration and proving
the new technology impossible
• “Failure to commercialise” Applications where
access to space derived services
or data
is limited
Failure
to Commercialise
or distracts from focus on customer

Traffic Management Markets
Space technologies are fundamental within all
areas of traffic management:



Satellite communication services provide
seamless connectivity between aircraft and
vessels with traffic control centres.
Satellite navigation provides global, real-time
position, velocity and timing information for all
modes of transport.
EO services can deliver timely information on
transport infrastructures and routes, weather and
emissions.
The UK has industrial strength and interest in all
areas.

The key challenge is to optimise the utilisation of
the existing transport networks through better
use of satellite-based services.
Natural Resources Management
Markets
The UK has strong capability in the development
and use of EO satellite systems capable of
making the unique measurements required for
precision farming and in monitoring forest
degradation.

Commercial precision agriculture

Climate change
GNSS and satcom are used in fisheries to
provide vessel monitoring services.
A current challenge is to exploit GNSS potential
to support tidal and wave energy.
Disaster Prevention and Relief
Satellite applications have the potential to
dramatically influence the ability of international
communities to predict and respond to natural
disasters.

Markets exist in the public sector and also in the
private sector, providing valuable information to
the insurance community - New GNSS signals
and services will spark new applications in
assurance and liability (insurance sector).
Key challenges include the sporadic nature of the
requirements and then the conflicting demands for
communications by multiple sectors in response to
disaster situations.
Security and Civil Protection
Markets
Particular application areas, such as maritime surveillance
and border control, offer good opportunities for the
exploitation of data from current and future enhanced EO
and communications systems.
Applications exist within civil protection, law enforcement,
border control, critical national infrastructure, rescue
forces and emergency services for exploiting the Galileo
Public Regulated Service (PRS) as well as satellite comms.
Challenges include:

Difficulty of market access

Partnership requirements between satellite community and downstream
industry in the various sectors

Engagement with global institutions and realisation of the potential and
capability of satellite EO

Inter-networking of existing communication systems

National licensing and procurement regimes for civil sector comms
services such as Tetra networks.
