application instructions.
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: Non-Discrimination Statement
Admission to the program is open to all qualified students and is based on a
point system. Refer to slides 33 & 34 for the current points system. The
minimum cumulative GPA for program admission is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Neither
Somerset Community College nor the radiography program discriminates on
the basis of race, color, national origin, age, religion, martial status, sex,
[sexual orientation], or handicap, in employment, educational programs or
activities as set forth in Title IX of the Educational Amendment of 1972, Title
VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of
1973.
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: Non-Discrimination Statement
• Radiography at the technical level involves the provision of direct care for
individuals and is characterized by the application of verified knowledge in
the skillful performance of radiologic functions. Therefore, in order to be
considered for admission or to be retained in the program after admission, all
applicants should possess the following technical standards: (please see next

RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: Technical Standards
Radiography involves the provision of direct care for individuals and is
characterized by the application of verified knowledge in the skillful
performance of radiological technical functions. Therefore, all applicants
should possess:
•Sufficient visual acuity, such as is needed in the accurate preparation and
administration of contrast media and for the observation necessary for
patient assessment and nursing care;
•Sufficient auditory perception to receive verbal communication from
patients and members of the health team and to assess health needs of
people through the use of monitoring devices such as cardiac monitors,
stethoscopes, intravenous infusion pumps, fire alarms, etc.;
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: Technical Standards (cont.)
•Sufficient gross and fine motor coordination to respond promptly and to
implement the skills including the manipulation of equipment, positioning
and lifting patients required in meeting health needs related to radiologic
technology;
•Sufficient communication skills (speech, reading, writing) to interact with
individuals and to communicate their needs promptly and effectively, as may
be necessary in the patient’s/client’s interest, and;
•Sufficient intellectual and emotional functions to plan and implement care
for individuals.
RADIOGRAPHY
INSTRUCTIONS
• Read all material in this online Radiography Pre-Admission Conference
•Obtain a Program Application and Statement of Understanding from Tanya
Cowan, Alton Blakley Building, Room 301 (Somerset Campus North) or Kathy
Howard, Building 3, Room 214 (Laurel Campus North).
•Along with the Application and Statement of Understanding, submit all
required documents, as outlined in the pre-admission conference, by the
deadline.
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference
• A radiographer is a health professional who uses radiation to produce
medical images of internal human anatomy. In some cases, the radiographer
performs medical procedures that evaluate physiological functions. Medical
radiographs and other medical imaging procedures are used by the physician
to diagnose and treat human disease.
•The Radiography Program at SCC is a full-time five semester Associate
Degree Program, which combines academic and laboratory courses with high
technology clinical instruction. After graduation, a qualified student is eligible
for national (ARRT) certification and KY state licensure. A prospective
radiography student is advised that the ARRT examination board may not
accept a student’s application if he/she has been convicted of a felony or
major misdemeanor.
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference
• Beginning in the summer of 2011, the radiography program will be
admitting a cohort of seven (7) every semester.
• The application deadline for each class is the last Friday during the semester
prior to the intended semester of enrollment. For example, the deadline to
apply for the summer 2011 class is the last Friday of class of the spring 2011
semester.
•Courses in progress during the deadline date will be used in the admission
process. Submit the Statement of Understanding, Program Application, and
other needed documents as outlined in the conference in order to be eligible
for the selective admission application process.
•The turn around time for application deadline and beginning the program is
very short, especially for the summer class. The applicant should be prepared
to begin the program as soon as ten (10) days after the application deadline.
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference
• Prior to beginning the radiography program the student must have
satisfactorily completed the first Anatomy & Physiology course (BIO 137) and
College Algebra (MT 150).
• The more general education classes completed the better the chances of
being accepted.
•It is particularly beneficial to have completed the four math and science
courses, since grades of an “A” or “B” are awarded additional points.
•An ACT score is needed for the radiography application process. We do not
accept COMPASS scores.
•A minimum composite score of 20 on the ACT or residual ACT examination is
required for admission into the radiography program.
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference
• Applications do not carry over from one admission cycle to the next.
•If you are not accepted and wish to apply for the next semester’s class, you
must read all material and follow instructions found in the online preadmission conference as well as submitting a new application.
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: Program Mission
• The mission of the SCC Radiography Program is to provide a quality
affordable education in the field of radiologic technology. Using theory and
performance-based instruction, the program’s faculty strives to provide an
educational environment which equips the student with entry level
radiography skills, as well as strengthening critical thinking, problem solving,
and communication skills.
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: Program Goals
•Goal 1: The student will exhibit critical thinking and problem solving skills.
•Goal 2: The student will utilize oral, written and interpersonal
communication skills.
•Goal 3: The student will demonstrate professional growth and development.
•Goal 4: The student will develop clinical performance skill and competencies
of an entry level radiographer.
•Goal 5: The program will continually monitor its effectiveness in graduating
entry level radiographers.
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: Testing Requirements
All first-time students with no previous college and those students who have
not completed freshman English or college algebra, MUST take the college’s
assessment test (COMPASS placement instrument) prior to advising and
registration. The only exception to this policy is those students who scored a
20 or higher in reading and math, and 18 or higher in English on the National
ACT. The ACT (or ACT Residual) is used as one of the program’s admission
assessment tools; a COMPASS score cannot be used as a substitute. Please
call the Testing Center at (606) 451-6850, for information on placement
testing.
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: Application Procedure

RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: Program Admission
•Admission to the radiography program is competitive. The number of students
accepted into the program is limited because a portion of the teaching is done in
hospitals that cannot accommodate large numbers of students. Additionally,
enrollment in the radiography program may be restricted due to limited laboratory
facilities or faculty and program resources.
•Candidate selection is based on a points system (see points system information on
slides 33 & 34). The program admissions committee will select the candidates
receiving the highest points total from the applicant pool for that semester. All
candidates will receive one of three notifications; a letter of acceptance, a letter of
non-acceptance, or a letter of alternate status.
•All candidates accepted into the program are expected to attend an orientation
session scheduled during the week prior to the beginning of the semester of
admission.
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: Admission Committee Members
Membership on the Radiography Program Admissions Committee may include any or
all of the following persons:
•Program Coordinator
•Program Clinical Coordinator
•Program Faculty Member
•Associate Dean of Health Sciences
•Admissions Officer
•Counselor
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: Selection Process
Selection of students for the program will be made by the President or the president’s
designee, after considering the recommendation of the Admissions Committee. An
applicant is considered a strong candidate if the following qualifications are met:
•Applicants with an ACT composite score of 20 or above;
•Applicants with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) in the required
general education courses completed (minimum of 21 hours), or the student’s an
overall GPA, which ever is greater.

courses for the program.
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: Post Admission Requirements
Students will be notified of CPR, immunizations, Hepatitis B, liability insurance,
background check and drug screening requirements after being accepted into the
program. All requirements outlined in the acceptance packets must be met in order to
remain enrolled in the radiography program. Documents of fulfilling requirements
must be provided. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in dismissal
from the program.
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: Accreditation
Somerset Community College is accredited by the Southern Association of College and
Schools (SACS). The Radiography Program is accredited by the Joint Review
Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: ARRT Certification
•After completing the competency based education curriculum, a qualified student is
eligible to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) certification
examination. A prospective radiography student is advised that the ARRT examination
board may not accept a student’s application if there has been a conviction of a felony
or major misdemeanor, including drug possession, assault, DUIs and/or public
intoxication. Students who have been convicted of, or pled guilty to, or plead no lo
contendere to a crime, may request a pre-application review of the violation in order
to obtain a ruling on the impact of their eligibility for examination. A special preapplication review form may be requested from the ARRT office.

Pre-Admission Conference: Frequently Asked Questions
•Do I need to submit my high school transcript? No, we do not need a copy of your high school transcript for
application to the program unless that is your only source for your ACT scores.
•Do I need to submit official transcripts or official ACT scores with my application to the program? No, we do
not need official transcripts submitted with program applications. Students may print a copy of their
transcripts themselves through their PeopleSoft account when applying to the program. If students are not
able to self-print a copy of their transcript for some reason, submit a request to Admissions for an advising
transcript. Advising transcripts are not official and do not require payment. Submitted ACT scores for program
application may be copied from PeopleSoft by students as well.
•How many students are selected for the program? Seven students will be selected to begin classes each
summer, fall and spring for a total of 21 students per year. Each group of seven students forms a cohort and
those in a cohort will remain together in sequence throughout the program.
•Why are there cohorts and how are they beneficial? Each group of seven students making up a cohort will
receive more individual attention from program faculty because of the smaller classes. Also, students will form
close ties to one another during the course of the program and study groups are formed easily.
RADIOGRAPHY
Pre-Admission Conference: Frequently Asked Questions (cont.)
•Are there any second shift clinical rotations? Yes, second shift clinical rotations are mandatory without
exception. Students are assigned clinical rotations by program faculty.
•How many clinical sites will I attend? A student will attend up to three or four different clinical sites
throughout the program according to assigned schedules. Students are not guaranteed clinical assignments
close to their home. Some sites can only accommodate one student at a time. Clinical schedules are nonnegotiable.
•Will I have a dress code in clinicals? Yes, there is a dress code for clinical rotations. Also, visible tattoos must
be covered while students are in clinical sites.
•Do I have to complete all the General Education courses before I apply to the program? No, the only two
classes which must be complete before entering into the program are College Algebra (MAT 150 or MT 150)
and Anatomy & Physiology I (BIO 137). However, more points are earned for each completed general
education course. This is outlined on the Admission Points System slides.
•When will I know if I am selected for the program? Because applications are accepted until the last Friday of
the prior semester, students will receive a letter before classes begin the following semester. For example, if a
student wishes to apply for the summer cohort, the deadline for application would be the last Friday during the
spring semester just prior. Students would be informed of the selection very soon after the deadline before the
summer cohort begins.
