and flavour of important issues:

WHAT DO DIAGNOSTICS SYSTEMS INVOLVE &
HOW THEY FIT IN THE ENVIRONMENT ?

In our complex of Accelerators, since late 80’s , systems are NOMORE
pieces of hardware only - software issues and integration to higher
complex levels have become part & parcel of a given measurement
system

The 1991 ‘model’ of Systems development and commissioning System Specific software, Infrastructure/Architecture , Application Level

One must appreciate complexity of certain measurement
systems as well as (a) general integration issues , (b) dependency
on non-BD factors,


Positive point is that for some systems we have new
young people who lack experience but have the capacity
to develop knowledge of OLD SYSTEM & build NEW
systems BUT the INTEGRATION ASPECTS WOULD BE AN
ISSUE OF IMPORTANCE

EXPERIENCED staff departures in recent years and next:
DWilliams, MLeGras ,JOlsfors, CCarter, OMarqversen,
GMartini, LMerard ,..


Making the aspects of maintenance & /or
system extension/improvements very difficult
HENCE,often for many systems one can only propose
“extension” or ‘copies’ of existing similar systems & the
associated methodology of access even though the
physical sensors & devices may have substantially new
hardware component in them.

PSB:

Wire Scanners Details

Major Project ongoing for these 8 systems and at this stage , too early to
say how far we will get this year. Complex micro-coded Motor Control,
new ADC-VD72/INCAA-2MHz (not ICV122) , prototype electronics board,
RT-task etc.. Delayed on the whole by 1 year. Manpower problem(Olsfors..)
{ history: 1 PS type device was installed for test purposes down to 50MeV with 2 regimes
:extr. Photomultipliers for secondaries above 200 MeV & secondary emmission from wire
for further down to 50 MeV }




One milestone is to check one system to work with beam before end of
this year. If tests successful, the prototype extended for all 8 systems
Involves several persons in very significant manner with high priority
Feasible -
simplest, for tests : use OTR test method [ needs iris control as well ]
Definitive: needs, priorities & definitions with ‘NvideoOS’ or we can
continue PCI systems a la carte ( CTF3-Streak C., TT2-OTR, ………………

Is IN/OUT really needed in PPM ? - one can do without because
leaving it in even for high intensity may be OK without affecting
beam blowup?
For Electron Cloud effect, improvements HAVE BEEN made,
particularly with polarisation - but results not too positive ?

The present system was designed during 20 bunch era and is
based on a half-a sine wave kick and so the phase of the kick
was not too critical. Now, for LHC-era beams say with 4
bunches (which show much more unequal ampltd response)
the kicker phase gets critical (even for Trev synch) & with fine
phase adjustments and so the recommendation is to do
measurements with sufficient intensity and at least 4
equidistant bunches till we get opportunity to replace/renew the
system - rectangular pulse like PSB ?, BTF technique ? What
DSP?..etc
[ PRIORITY & ORGANIZATIONAL ]
LIMITATIONS at High Intensity (nTOF & CNGS) - Attenuators
/power stages get burnt/blown up. BETTER PROTECTION
IMPLEMENTED
In TT2 difficult to understand ( Radiation? ) what happens
because extreme tests (upto 80V) in lab showed no adverse
effect .. BETTER PROTECTION IMPLEMENTED
