Keynote Speaker – Ms Fatima Chohan
Deputy Minister, MsFatima Chohan, having
had a distinguished career as a Member of
Parliament, was appointed by President
Jacob Zuma as Deputy Minister of Home
Affairs on 1 November 2010.

As a Member of Parliament since 1996 when she
was appointed as a back-bencher, Deputy
Minister Chohan has chaired various ad hoc
committees as well as the Portfolio Committees
on Justice and Constitutional Development,
Public Enterprises and Basic Education in the
National Assembly.

Deputy Minister Chohan is currently a
representative of the National Assembly to the
Judicial Services Commission having been
nominated in May 2009.She was also nominated to
represent Parliament on the Magistrates
Commission for two terms during which she chaired
the Western Cape Provincial Committee of the
Magistrates Commission which recommended new
appointments to the Bench.

Prior to being appointed as a Member of
Parliament, Deputy Minister Chohan held the
following positions: Legal Advisor in the Office of
the Premier (Gauteng), Legal Advisor in the
Gauteng Legislature, and Deputy Head of the
Metro Legal Services in the Greater
Johannesburg.

Beginning her activist career while still a student,
Deputy Minister Chohan, while at WITS, was elected
to the Executive Committee of the Muslim Students
Society while also being a member of the Black
Student Society.
With a BProc from the University of Witwatersrand
(WITS), Deputy Minister Chohan was admitted to the
Side Bar in 1998.
