time in the US?
3. What do you think of time-conscious
Americans? (open-ended)

Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Time is the same in all places, but people’s
relationship with time is different from country to
country. In the United States, time is a real,
precious resource, and every minute counts. People
here are always in a rush and under pressure.
There are no short conversations or small
exchanges with strangers because people think it is
a waste of time. Does this sound like your country?
If it does not, and if you don’t think you would like
such a place, you would most likely be unhappy in
the United States, where doing things quickly is
seen as a skill.

Time-Conscious Americans
Para. 1 Americans believe no one
stands still. If you are not moving
ahead, you are falling behind. This
attitude results in a nation of people
committed to researching, experimenting
and exploring. Time is one of the two
elements that Americans save carefully,
the other being labor.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 2 “We are slaves to nothing but the
clock, ” it has been said. Time is treated as if it
were something almost real. We budget it, save
it, waste it, steal it, kill it, cut it, account for it;
we also charge for it. It is a precious resource.
Many people have a rather acute sense of the
shortness of each lifetime. Once the sands have
run out of a person’s hourglass, they cannot be
replaced. We want every minute to count.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 3a A foreigner’s first impression of the
US is likely to be that everyone is in a rush —
often under pressure. City people always
appear to be hurrying to get where they are
going, restlessly seeking attention in a store,
or elbowing others as they try to complete
their shopping. 句型 Racing through daytime
meals is part of the pace of life in this country.
Working time is considered precious.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 3b Others in public eating-places are
waiting for you to finish so they, too, can be
served and get back to work within the time
allowed. You also find drivers will be abrupt
and people will push past you. You will miss
smiles, brief conversations, and small exchanges
with strangers. Don’t take it personally. This is
because people value time highly, and they
resent someone else “wasting” it beyond a
certain appropriate point.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 4a Many new arrivals in
the States will miss the opening
exchanges of a business call, for
example. They will miss the ritual
interaction that goes with a
welcoming cup of tea or coffee that may be a
convention in their own country. They may
miss leisurely business chats in a restaurant or
coffee house.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 4b Normally, Americans do not assess
their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over
extended small talk; much less do they take
them out for dinner, or around on the
golf course while they develop a sense
of trust. 句型 Since we generally assess
and probe professionally rather than
socially, we start talking business very
quickly. Time is, therefore, always ticking
in our inner ear.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 5 Consequently, we work hard at the
task of saving time. We produce a steady flow
of labor-saving devices; we communicate
rapidly through faxes, phone calls or emails
rather than through personal contacts, which
though pleasant, take longer—especially given
our traffic-filled streets.句型 We, therefore, save
most personal visiting for after-work hours or
for social weekend gatherings.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 6a To us the impersonality of
electronic communication has little or no
relation to the significance of the matter
at hand. In some countries no major
business is conducted without eye contact,
requiring face-to-face conversation.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 6b In America, too, a final
agreement will normally be signed
in person. However, people are
meeting increasingly on television
screens, conducting
“teleconferences” to settle
problems not only in this country
but also—by satellite—
internationally.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 7 The US is definitely a telephone
country. Almost everyone uses the
telephone to conduct business, to chat
with friends, to make or break social
appointments, to say “Thank you”, to
shop and to obtain all kinds of
information. Telephones save the feet and
endless amounts of time. This is due
partly to the fact that the telephone
service is superb here, whereas the postal
service is less efficient. 句型
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 8a Some new arrivals will come
from cultures where it is considered
impolite to work too quickly. Unless a
certain amount of time is allowed to
elapse, it seems in their eyes as if the
task being considered were
insignificant, not worthy of proper
respect.句型 Assignments are,
consequently, given added weight by
the passage of time.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 8b In the US, however, it is
taken as a sign of skillfulness or
being competent to solve a problem,
or fulfill a job successfully, with
speed. Usually, the more important
a task is, the more capital, energy,
and attention will be poured into it
in order to “get it moving”.

Para. 1
New Horizon College English
Book 2
Unit 1
Para. 2
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 3a
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 3b
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 4a
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 4b
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 5
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 6a
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 6b
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 7
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 8a
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 1
Para. 8b

What does time mean to us?
When asked what time really means, different
people may come up with distinctive replies. A
man of practical mind would say time is
money, while a man of wisdom would say time
is life.
A western philosopher used to say “The
greatest sacrifice is the sacrifice of time.”
whereas we have an old Chinese saying “An
inch of time cannot be bought by an inch of
gold”. Clearly, although people are different in
approach, they all agree that time is precious.
Despite the fact that time is valuable, people
deal with time in different ways. For example,
Americans value time as something
irrecoverable while Chinese treat time as
something enjoyable. Besides, to the American
businessmen, time signifies money.
They seize every golden minute to make money.
By contrast, to the Chinese businessmen, time
means an interpersonal network. They seize
every occasion to get it into shape.
What should we do with time?
Just as we have seen, time is indeed a precious
resource as every one of us is endowed with
lifetime only once. As the saying goes, “All time
is no time when it is past.”(光阴一去不复返)
As new hopes for the rise of China, we college
students have an obligation to treasure our
time and work hard at the task of saving time.
The waste of time in our eyes should be the
equivalent of killing one’s life, while the awareness
of time should be equal to cherishing one’s life.
Therefore, we should make best of our time,
devoting all our time, energy and attention to
what counts much to our life.
Only when we pour our lifetime into the
valuable things will we never feel guilty of the
life we have spent. And on our deathbeds we
will not be cursed with the idea that we have
idled away our life.
