SpinLab Future Projects
1. Very Short Term (PST 2005)
2. In parallel
3. Short Term
NOT INCLUDED:
Hardware work for ABS2!!
First Discussion in Hamburg
1.
2.
3.
New (old!) proposal for peaking exponent measurement (Nass)
Beam dump principles questioned (Will it work?) (Lenisa)
What can we learn by measuring alpha and velocity distribution of
a focused beam 60-80 cm downstream of the focus point? (i.e.
ABS 2) Point: if we don’t need the diagnostic system to tolerate a large
(x100) input flux, then we save a lot of time, money and energy
4.
5.
6.
7.
Agreement that measurements for the conference should be with
RHIC dimensions for nozzle and skimmer if at all possible.
Changing water temperature from 0 to 20C for dissociator cooling
may not affect the beam parameters. (Lenisa)
We do not know the pumping speed for H2 in chamber 2 of ABS1,
and therefore cannot quantify how much help a cryo pump would
be. (Statera)
Adding a small turbo pump between the large turbos and the prevacuum may lower the pressure a factor of 2 or more. (Statera)
Very Short Term (PST 2005)
1.
Study how atomic fraction (alpha) and velocity distribution
of atomic/molecular beam depend on dissociator cooling.
2.
Measure peaking exponent of atomic/molecular beam.
In parallel
1.
2.
Measure ABS2 intensity
Add turbo to ABS1 pre-vacuum ch. 2
Short Term (Jan2006-June2006)
1.
2.
Rotate CW chamber
Characterize ABS2 without magnets (alpha + vel. Dist vs.
flux, nozzle temp AND peaking exponent)
Peaking Exponent measured at Jade Hall
Beam intensity distrubtion
Flux into magnets
f ( )  cos 
n
I mag  Iinput (1  cos sk )
n1
Use chamber 2 as a compression volume, and relate the
chamber pressure to the inlet flux.
Calibrate with either beam monitor or flow meter (or both!)
Free: measurement of pumping speed in chamber 2
Jade Hall published (Koch thesis) only for deuterium
molecular beam
Basic Measurements
Motivation: explain high intensity of RHIC source
Manpower: Luca and Michelle, 3 months
Needs:

New collar with temperature measurements and controls
New skimmer and nozzle (same param as RHIC)??
Separate water cooling refridgerator?
Measurement of heat removed by water cooling
Precise flowmeter for small gas flows (0.05*10 sccm)
More cooling power for collar? (already exists in lab?)
