INTRODUCTIONS
How could we begin this essay?
QUESTION? QUOTATION? SURPRISE?
EXCLAMATION? PERSONAL OPINION?
SOUND? FACT? STATEMENT?
Let’s try three different introductions.
Question: Do you like rainy days? I just love them. Why?
Because I can watch TV when I want to, catch up on
my reading, and take a lovely little nap.
Quotation: “Mom, I just heard it is supposed to rain all
day! I’ve been waiting for a day like this forever.
Finally, I can watch TV all day, read my new book, or
even take a long nap.”
Whodunit: As I was creeping past my brother’s bedroom,
I heard this sound that startled me. What could it be?
I dashed to the window and was in for the surprise of
the day. It was raining. No, it was pouring! I was
delighted. Now, I could watch TV, read my new book,
and even take an afternoon nap.

Time travel is here! You have the
opportunity to travel back in time to a
significant historical event. Write an
essay explaining where you would go
and why you would choose that event.
Remember to add specific details to support and explain your
reasons.
Now that you have lots of practice
with Expository writing it is time to
make your descriptive paragraphs
stronger. The easiest way to achieve
this goal is to add sensory details.
Remember in science class when you
learned to use your 5 senses to
describe your world. Well now is the
time to get your nose and ears and
eyes and mouth and fingers doing
their things!
Today’s prompt is about going back in
time to a historical event. Perhaps you
traveled back to the Alamo. During the
siege you might have:
Heard: ____________________________
Seen: _____________________________
Smelled: ___________________________
Tasted: ____________________________
Touched: __________________________
The following are excerpts from “Julie of the
Wolves” by Jean Craighead George.
“ Kapu sniffed the meat, gulped, licked his jaws,
and whined for more.”
The sentence could have read, “Kapu ate the meat
and wanted more.” But instead a picture is
painted for you with words instead of a
paintbrush.
“ She understood …instantly and danced lightly
from one foot to the other,” or it could have
read, “She knew right away and started to hop.”
Each word you use in your writing is
important. Take time to consider which word
paints the picture you want the reader to
visualize.
As you write each word, each sentence, each
paragraph, read it over to yourself. Does it
say what you want it to say? Is your
painting finished or does it need more
details ?

Most people have a special place they
go to be alone or to relax.
Think about your favorite place. Now
write an essay explaining why this
place is your favorite.
Remember to add specific details to support and explain your
reasons.
In conclusion…
You want your conclusion to restate the
three reasons you discussed in your
essay.
Your conclusion should not add any
new information. It should simply
impress upon the reader how you feel
about the topic.
In conclusion, I feel that Washington,
D.C. is my favorite place to visit
because it is our nation’s capitol,
learning about our nation’s history is
important as an American, and
because my grandparents live there.
Why not plan a visit to our capitol
soon and see all that Washington, D.C.
has to offer. It may become your
favorite place to visit too.
