A Classification and Characterization of Computer Supported Collaborative
Learning Tools based on System Features and Instructional Model
Jolsone Augustin, Advisor: Dr. Sue Smith
Computer Science, Prairie View A&M University
Objective
To provide a classification and
characterization of CSCL tools.
 Developed a classification scheme
The Classification
 Reviewed a total of 16 CSCL tools
Problem-oriented CVLE *:uses
contextualized situations as
basis to build knowledge
Project-oriented CVLE: focuses
on learner’s involvement in a
learning activity
Scenario-driven CVLE: encourages
reasoning on former cases or
scenarios in order to gain
knowledge on new contexts
Simulation-driven CVLE: promotest coordination and awareness
Course-oriented CVLE: enhances
traditional classroom practices
The Characterization
CSCL Overview
Collaborative Learning is an
interactive process that nurtures
group knowledge building with
active involvement of the learner.
Computer Supported Collaborative
Learning (CSCL) is a research area
that uses technology to support
instructional theories that advocate
active and group learning.
Related Work
Bafoutsou and Mentzas did a
comparative analysis of web-based
collaborative tools based on the
types of services provided.
Personal Space: space users can personalize,
serves as canvas for users to collect thoughts
and create artifacts to share with the
community
Interaction Scheme: One-to-one, one-to-many
and many-to-many
Synchronous Communication: real-time
communication
Asynchronous Communication: message board,
email and listservs
Course Management: course management tools
include calendars, ability to set or remove
project or assignment deadlines, document
editors and grading facilities
Surveying/Reporting: mechanisms for users to
report problems and/or submit surveys
Our Approach
We analyze and classify some
reputable tools according to the
instructional model and learning
theories implemented
Accessed tool prototypes online
(where available)
Identified collaborative
characteristics
A CSCL Tool: The Crocodile Virtual Campus
Conclusion
This work may help educators
determine CSCL tools & features
promoting a particular learning
pedagogy. It may also guide CSCL
developers in designing new tools.
