FUNDRAISING
From Grassroots to Galas
Sheryl Kadmon – TSA of Texas Executive Director
Fundraising
Basic principle of local fundraising for TSA:
You will not successfully raise money
within the general network of members
and supporters.

Fundraising
How do you build a network of community support?
How do you tap into the small percentage of members who may become
givers, especially “in-kind”?
What types of events provide the largest financial returns and what are the
“magic” ingredients?
Helping Children &
Changing Lives
3
Fundraising
Network of community support begins with one “key person.”
How do you identify this person?
Helping Children &
Changing Lives
4
Building a community support network
Identify active community fundraisers
•
Watch newspaper in events sections; the same names will appear as gala chairpersons,
honorees, or participants.
•
They can be directly approached for assistance:
“We are a small non-profit organization with large goals to make a difference in our
community. Would you be willing to assist with organizing a fundraising event?”

5
Building a community support network
Identify outstanding community members directly affected by
Tourette’s syndrome.
• Visit with referring physicians on your medical board and ask them to approach patients who
may not be active with TSA locally or nationally.
• Network with active members – who do they know?
Is there anyone in the extended family who may be approached?
Or friends? Or friends of friends?

Building an internal support network
Compile Data
1) Create a gala donor/invitation list.
− Include all supportive community members
− TSA donors of $100.00 plus
− All TSA members identified as business owners, professional and/or
political
The donor list is a foundation, but remains a work in progress.
Names will be added and deleted regularly according to
honorees, chairmen and honorary chairmen. It takes years to
“grow” a successful donor list. Guard it well!

Fundraising Events: Gala
Major Fundraising Events
• Gala Event
“Magic” ingredients for success:
− Honoree(s)
− Chairperson(s)
.
Helping Children &
Changing Lives
15
Fundraising Events: Gala
An Honoree is a person, a couple or a family who is recognized
at the gala event for their contribution to the local community.
Particularly meaningful if the contribution has a direct
connection to Tourette, however, this is not necessary. Usually
2-3 honorees at each event.
Being an honoree means:
− A financial commitment to the organization
− A personal and usually long and coveted list of friends,
business associates and family who will buy tickets and tables
at the gala event to support the honoree.

16
Fundraising Events: Gala
The Chairperson actively coordinates the gala evening.
− Usually an outstanding community member
− Can be a person, a couple or co-chairpersons
Responsibilities of a Chairperson:
− Will bring financial commitment
− Will solicit table sales from friends, family and business associates
− Will bring list of family, friends and business associates
With respected honorees and chairpersons, you will
have financial support and a well-attended event.
