Performance Coaching  Selecting a Person – Based on their experience, intelligence and determination “Casting Employees”  Set Expectations – Non-Negotiable’s – Define the steps. Make sure they understand the philosophy and expected outcomes.

 Motivate the person – Where are they and how can you support them.

 Develop the person – Build on their strengths – take advantage of opportunities.

Performance Coaching – In the Beginning  Does the person “Fit” the job?

 What are the traits and behaviors that you need?

 Communicate your “Shared Values”  Communicate your culture and your expectations.

 Be clear on what are your “Non Negotiable’s”

Performance Coaching Expectations  Define the steps.

 What are the quality standards?

 What are they accountable for?

 How will it be measured?

 Provide the tools, resources & training.

 Settling – Everything sends a message!

Performance Coaching Motivation  Create emotional buy-in (Connect with the person)  Reward good behaviors.

 Recognize behaviors and/or activities that are “NOT” good. (Not the Person)  Create a relationship  Spark excitement and enthusiasm.

Performance Coaching Developing  Skills – How-To’s of the job  Knowledge – What the person is aware of.

 Talents – – Striving Talent – The “Why of the Person” Why does the person get out of bed each day? Why are they motivated to stand out? (Or not to stand out?) – Thinking Talent – How they think, how they weigh alternatives, how they come to decisions.

– Relating Talent – The “Who” of the person. Whom they trust, whom they build relationships with, whom they confront and whom they ignore.

Performance Coaching Developing  Treating everyone the same?

 Policies/Procedures – Discipline/rules – Expectations?

 Motivation, reward, acknowledgement?

Performance Coaching 10 Rules of Engagement  Know whom you are coaching and where they are coming from.

 Be willing and able to express your feelings openly.

 Maintain a positive feeling and attitude toward the person you coach.

 Realize the independent and individualistic nature of each person and adjust your approach accordingly.

 Emphasize with the person. . . Understand how He/She feels.

Performance Coaching 10 Rules of Engagement  Learn to accept the person for who they are. Not for what you want them to be.

 Do not allow the power of your position to dictate the solution to a problem.

 Do not give into persistent denial by the person. . . Be strong!

 Your observations must be: Objective – Descriptive and shared.

 View the person as being in a growth process. You are their to aid in their growth.

Performance Coaching People don’t change that much Don’t waste time trying to put “in” what was left “out” Try to draw out what was left in!
