Soot filter traps all soot particles and hydrocarbon.
It needs to burn off the trapped soot particles.
A key measure of its performance is the balance point temperature.
The balance point temperature varies from engine to engine.
Balance point temperature
: the engine operating condition and the exhaust temperature where soot burn off rate is greater than or equal to the engine soot output.
Green Diesel Technology TM
Introduced in 2001 School Bus:
Green Diesel Technology ® School Bus: 2007 Technology Today International 530E 275HP diesel engine with special low-NOx calibration Catalyzed diesel particulate filter Must use ultra-low-sulfur (<15ppm) diesel fuel EPA/CARB emission certifications granted March 2001 Customer deliveries began in 2001

NOx Adsorber Conclusions
Precious Metals Content continues to Decline
Costs Improve
The NOx Adsorber Acts like a NOx Capacitor
Lower engine out NOx means Higher efficiency Catalyst
Virtual Sensors
How would you like a device that:
You don’t maintain
There is no warranty
Its reliable Its durable It provides the results that you want Does not physically exist

Conclusions
PM filters are successful in commercial vehicles today
Proper regeneration will provide functionality as well as reliability
The typical class 8 truck load factors will induce passive regeneration (like Green Diesel Buses)
Conclusions
NOx Adsorbers
Cost Improvements = precious metals reductions
Cost Improvements = Efficiency improvements
Virtual Sensors
Taking advantage of computing power
It is very cost effective if “nothing” is there
