The Target
Standard 4b
Groups of people
use different
methods to
make decisions
and
assignments.
Did You Know?
• Decision-making is an
important part of
working with any
group. It wouldn’t be
fair for the person in
authority to make all
of the decisions .
Instead we use
democratic methods.
Did You Know?
• When decisionmaking is
democratically based,
it allows more people
to be involved.
Democratic methods
sometimes take
longer but they are
much fairer.
Think About It
• Mrs. Smith decided
the class should stay
in from recess to
learn their
multiplication tables.
Is this a democratic
way to make the
decision? How might
the students feel
about the decision?
The Target
Different
situations call
for different
democratic
methods.
Did You Know?
• Many times a group
will make some
simple rules about
voting and the idea
with the most votes
win. Everyone has to
agree for this method
to work.
Did You Know?
• Sometimes groups may follow an established
procedure like the one the government follows in
the legislature. People are given the opportunity
to voice their opinions at certain times before
votes are taken. Everyone must accept the
rules.
Did You Know?
• In any group, decisions
must be made to assign
jobs and responsibilities. All
of the people involved must
agree to accept the method
used to be democratic. The
people must have a say in
the decision.
Think About It
• Janice suggested her committee vote on the
hallway decorations right away. Diane wanted to
discuss everyone’s ideas. What would you
suggest to the group to help them be more
democratic?

The government and the
citizens of a country must work
together for the good of
everyone!
