Current Health Trends and Challenges
Current Health Trends & Challenges

Obesity:
 Increases the risk for diseases such as heart disease, high
blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, and some types of cancer
 US trends




72 million people, or 1/3 of adults are obese (doubled since
1980)
16% of children are obese (tripled since 1980)
In 2000, obesity-related health care costs totaled an estimated
$117 billion
Polk County has one of the highest obesity rates in Florida:
33.2% in 2007
Current Health Trends & Challenges

Physical Activity:

Regular physical activity that is performed on most days of the
week helps control weight and reduces the risk for:






Dying from heart disease
Developing diabetes and high blood pressure
Developing colon cancer
In 2007, only 30.2% of Polk County residents met the recommendations
for moderate physical activity
Evidence indicates that aspects of the home, workplace, and community
environments influence a person's level of physical activity
Healthy community design promotes physical activity, improves air
quality, lowers risk of injuries, and increases social connection and sense
of community
Current Health Trends & Challenges
 Public
health
initiatives can help
address these issues
 Good planning can
be part of the
solution to help
encourage a more
active lifestyle
