Great Britain
Scotland is a country to the north of
England and occupies the northern
third of the island of Great Britain. It is
bounded by the North Sea to the east,

west and Irish Sea to the southwest.
The national flag of Scotland is
the cross of St. Andrew, also
known as the Saltire. It is made
up of a great white cross which
spans diagonally across the
flag on a blue background.
National costumes
Each ‘clan’ (Scottish word for ‘family’)
has its own tartan (woolen material with
coloured square designs) and on
special occasions they wear traditional
Scottish costume which consist of the
famous ‘kilt’ (skirt) and special
accessories.

Edinburgh. It is the
cultural centre of the
country and one of the

(and most visited) landmark.

Glasgow is the largest city of the U.K. after London and
Birmingham, and Scotland’s industrial capital. Shipbuilding is the
leading industry. But other industries such as iron and steel,
engineering and coal-mining are highly developed too.

Scotland’s landscape is very beautiful, with the
‘glens’ (mountain valleys), wild mountains and
‘lochs’ (lakes).

Loch Ness with its celebrated monster, Nessie, is
just one of the many Scottish lakes.

The most famous Scotland’s festivals are the Edinburgh
Military Tattoo and the International Festival of Music and
Drama which take place in Edinburgh.

The large square in front of the
Edinburgh Castle is the scene of
the Tattoo,
a military parade
which takes place every August
and September. This Tattoo
celebrates over 50 years.
