Created in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Seattle

Co-inventors Joel Pritchard, William Bell &

Goal to create a recreational game for the
whole family
Name Pickle came from Pritchard’s dog, would
retrieve the ball
Game grew in the mid 70’s

Short service line both service & non-volley

Net 36” on ends & 34” in the center

RULES
Start – Coin toss or volley to serve
Serving
* 1 foot behind the line
* Underhand
* Paddle pass below waist
* Ball struck in air not bounced
* Diagonal crosscourt, land in service court
* Serve hits net and lands in service court, let
* 1st team serves once, after both players serve before other team
* When serve is won player in the right service court serves
* When serving fault occurs players stay
* Server alternates sides as long as they score, only time team
members switch sides
RULES
Volley
* a player can not go into the non-volley area, this
includes on follow-through, can only go into non-volley
area if the ball bounced in this area
Double-Bounce Rule
* the first hit in a rally by each team
must come after the ball bounces,
bounce on serve & return, can be hit
off the bounce or in the air after
that

Faults
* hitting the ball out of bounds
* hitting ball into net, not going over
* hit the ball without a bounce in the non-volley
zone
* hitting the ball in the air before the doublebounce rule
SCORING
Can only score when serving
Play to 11, win by 2
