Conclusion. (22:5-21)
The Vision of the Seven Trumpets
(8:6-11:19)

NIV Romans 8:22 We know that the
whole creation has been groaning as
in the pains of childbirth right up to
the present time. 23 Not only so, but
we ourselves, who have the firstfruits
of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we
wait eagerly for our adoption as sons,
the redemption of our bodies.
The Vision of the Seven Trumpets
(8:6-11:19)

What is meant by bondage to decay? After
the Fall into Sin, this creation is slowly
seeing the truth of sin come to light – all
falls apart outside of God’s will. It is true
that we see God’s grace keep this creation
from totally falling apart and at times
reversing sin’s effects in it. But it is also
true that this universe has begun a slow
descent into chaos outside of God’s diving
design for it.
The Vision of the Seven Trumpets
(8:6-11:19)

This Vision takes a cosmic look at creation
and the Christian’s role in it. This creation is
in a bondage to decay. Yet God lovingly
draws men’s hearts to Himself. The
following judgments occur to lead men to
repent sin. Read 9:20-21. God is not the
author of evil in this world but has chose to
allow us to see this world as fallen and
broken so we repent.
Severed Tree Limb








We are cut off from the original glory of this
creation.
Imagine a tree limb cut off.
What does it look like a day latter?
A week latter?
A month latter?
A year latter?
A decade latter?
We are cut off (and diminished) from an
original glory for this creation?
The First Trumpet
The First Trumpet

NIV Revelation 8:6 Then the seven angels
who had the seven trumpets prepared to
sound them. 7 The first angel sounded his
trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed
with blood, and it was hurled down upon
the earth. A third of the earth was burned
up, a third of the trees were burned up, and
all the green grass was burned up
The First Trumpet


Rain brings forth life.
This is death rained down on earth.
CHAPTERS 8-11.
CHAPTER 16.
The present fallen world.


FIRST TRUMPET
Food for life
diminished.
Hell arrives.



FIRST BOWL OF
GOD’S WRATH
No food. No life.
Eternal death
and torment.
The First Trumpet

The first trumpet sounds to remind us
that the vegetative life that we see is
not in its original beauty.
The Second Trumpet
The Vision of the Seven Trumpets
(8:6-11:19)

8 The second angel sounded his
trumpet, and something like a huge
mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into
the sea. A third of the sea turned into
blood, 9 a third of the living creatures
in the sea died, and a third of the
ships were destroyed.
The Second Trumpet

The fireball might be a gigantic image
of siege or naval warfare that Romans
used.
The Second Trumpet

The second trumpet sounds to remind
us that the beautiful seas and oceans
are not in their original splendor.
CHAPTERS 8-11.
CHAPTER 16.
The present fallen world.


SECOND
TRUMPET
The sea, its
creatures, and
safe passage
diminished.
Hell arrives.


SECOND BOWL
OF GOD’S
WRATH
The sea is
completely dead.
The Third Trumpet
The Third Trumpet

10 The third angel sounded his
trumpet, and a great star, blazing like
a torch, fell from the sky on a third of
the rivers and on the springs of water- 11 the name of the star is
Wormwood. A third of the waters
turned bitter, and many people died
from the waters that had become
bitter.
The Third Trumpet



Drinking water is diminished that is
able to be consumed.
The meteor is from heaven as
judgment came down from heaven
upon Egypt.
Wormwood is a bitter poison.
CHAPTERS 8-11.
CHAPTER 16.
The present fallen world.


THIRD TRUMPET
Healthy drinking
water
diminished.
Hell arrives.


THIRD BOWL OF
GOD’S WRATH
No drinking
water. Eternal
thirst reigns.
The Fourth Trumpet
The Fourth Trumpet

12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet,
and a third of the sun was struck, a third of
the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a
third of them turned dark. A third of the day
was without light, and also a third of the
night. 13 As I watched, I heard an eagle
that was flying in midair call out in a loud
voice: "Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of
the earth, because of the trumpet blasts
about to be sounded by the other three
angels!"
The Fourth Trumpet

The fourth trumpet sounds to remind
us that the heavens have lost their
original splendor.



FOURTH BOWL
OF GOD’S
WRATH
Heavenly bodies
turn into a
searing blaze.
The Fourth Trumpet

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that
was flying in midair call out in a loud
voice: "Woe! Woe! Woe to the
inhabitants of the earth, because of
the trumpet blasts about to be
sounded by the other three angels!"
The Three Woes

3.
Demonic oppression comes for the
individual on earth.
The demonic uses mankind
collectively to do violence to each
other and persecute the Church.
Hell for the individual and collective
without God.
The Eagle

The form of the Eagle of one of the
four arch angels is notable that of the
spiritual realm. The following
judgment after this one are just that.
Spiritual plagues
The Fifth Trumpet
The Fifth Trumpet

NIV Revelation 9:1 The fifth angel sounded
his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen
from the sky to the earth. The star was
given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. 2
When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose
from it like the smoke from a gigantic
furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by
the smoke from the Abyss.
Star = Angel


This is imagery used before.
NIV Revelation 1:20 The seven
stars are the angels of the seven
churches.
The Fifth Trumpet

3 And out of the smoke locusts came
down upon the earth and were given
power like that of scorpions of the
earth. 4 They were told not to harm
the grass of the earth or any plant or
tree, but only those people who did
not have the seal of God on their
foreheads.
The Fifth Trumpet



The demonic are consuming forces.
They attack with scorpion stings -annoying, painful, but not normally
fatal.
The afflicted are those who do not
have the seal of the Lord – Baptism,
Spirit.
Immunity from demons


NIV Luke 10:17 The seventy-two
returned with joy and said, "Lord,
even the demons submit to us in your
name.“
NIV Colossians 3:17 And whatever you
do, whether in word or deed, do it all
in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving
thanks to God the Father through him.
Immunity from demons

NIV Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious
about anything, but in everything, by
prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
present your requests to God. 7 And
the peace of God, which transcends all
understanding, will guard your hearts
and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The Fifth Trumpet

5 They were not given power to kill
them, but only to torture them for five
months. And the agony they suffered
was like that of the sting of a scorpion
when it strikes a man. 6 During those
days men will seek death, but will not
find it; they will long to die, but death
will elude them.
Longing to escape life


There is reference to this elsewhere.
NIV 2 Samuel 1:9 "Then he said to
me, 'Stand over me and kill me! I am
in the throes of death, but I'm still
alive.‘
Life without life



Living on earth, but not enjoying life.
People seek release from life that is a
burden upon them.
Think of people who hunger for power
and fame, then think of people who
are often depressed and attacking
others. Are they the same?
The Fifth Trumpet


The demonic leave people spiritually
hurting and depressed that they
contemplate death as a release even
though they are healthy.
They attack for only a tiem, a season
(5 months is a locust life span).
Demonic warfare



The demons act with authority
(crowns), human reason (face), and
arrogance (hair).
But they are only interested in
consuming the peoples (teeth).
Hair was seen as woman’s’ pride.
There also might be reference to
Absalom.
The Fifth Trumpet

7 The locusts looked like horses
prepared for battle. On their heads
they wore something like crowns of
gold, and their faces resembled human
faces. 8 Their hair was like women's
hair, and their teeth were like lions'
teeth.
The Fifth Trumpet

9 They had breastplates like
breastplates of iron, and the sound of
their wings was like the thundering of
many horses and chariots rushing into
battle. 10 They had tails and stings
like scorpions, and in their tails they
had power to torment people for five
months.
5 Months


They have power for this kind of
torment for only for a time.
This is the lifespan of a locust.
The Fifth Trumpet

11 They had as king over them the
angel of the Abyss, whose name in
Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek,
Apollyon. 12 The first woe is past;
two other woes are yet to come.
Another name for the
Devil




Destroyer.
The angel of the Abyss, whose name in
Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon.
Why Hebrew and Greek?
The totality of the Bible is primarily written
in these. It shows the devil plaguing God’s
people throughout history.
The Fifth Trumpet

The fifth trumpet sounds to remind us
that this world is filled with demons
who attack humanity.
CHAPTERS 8-11.
CHAPTER 16.
The present fallen world.


FIFTH TRUMPET
Partial spiritual
attack by
demonic on
peoples of the
earth. People
spiritually suffer
under their
assault.
Hell arrives.


FIFTH BOWL OF
GOD’S WRATH
Darkness. God is
openly cursed by
the demonic
lunatics in their
pain.
The Sixth Trumpet
The Sixth Trumpet

13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet,
and I heard a voice coming from the horns
of the golden altar that is before God. 14 It
said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet,
"Release the four angels who are bound at
the great river Euphrates." 15 And the four
angels who had been kept ready for this
very hour and day and month and year
were released to kill a third of mankind.
The horns of the Golden
Altar
The horns of the altar provided
sanctuary. The altar’s sacrifice
provided forgiveness.
God has provided a way for peace with
Himself in the midst of this turbulent
world.
The area of the Euphrates historically
sent enemies to trouble God’s people.
The Euphrates reference?
The area of the Euphrates historically
sent enemies to trouble God’s people.
Four Angels


The Four Winds and Four Living
Creatures represent the totality of
God’s creation and His providence.
In the plan of salvation, physical
enemies do arise (as represented by
four angels at the Euphrates).
The Sixth Trumpet

16 The number of the mounted troops
was two hundred million. I heard their
number. 17 The horses and riders I
saw in my vision looked like this: Their
breastplates were fiery red, dark blue,
and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the
horses resembled the heads of lions,
and out of their mouths came fire,
smoke and sulfur.
Mouths spew what is in
hearts


Remember the Eagle
signifying spiritual plagues


These are demonic forces whose
power resides in their mouths spewing
destruction forth from their evil hearts.
They lead the nations into pride-filled
wars and self-destruction.
The Sixth Trumpet


The mouths of demons and their
prideful followers bring death.
The color of the breastplates
correspond to what comes out of the
mouths. Their hearts and mouths are
sources of this death that troubles all
mankind.
Demonic power is in their lies

18 A third of mankind was killed by
the three plagues of fire, smoke and
sulfur that came out of their mouths.
19 The power of the horses was in
their mouths and in their tails; for their
tails were like snakes, having heads
with which they inflict injury.
The Sixth Trumpet


SERPENT TAILS?
The tails remind us that these are
demonic forces at work.
The Sixth Trumpet

20 The rest of mankind that were not
killed by these plagues still did not
repent of the work of their hands;
they did not stop worshiping demons,
and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone
and wood-- idols that cannot see or
hear or walk. 21 Nor did they repent
of their murders, their magic arts,
their sexual immorality or their thefts.
The Sixth Trumpet

The sixth trumpet sounds to remind us
that humans kill humans needlessly
because of demonic influences. This
was never part of his original design.
It is a pretty good estimate here (onethird) as to how much of the world is
personally affected by war at given
time.
CHAPTERS 8-11.
CHAPTER 16.
The present fallen world.



SIXTH TRUMPET
Partial physical
attack by demonic
through war on
earth.
The Church is
cursed by the
world.
Hell arrives.



SIXTH BOWL OF
GOD’S WRATH
In futility, the Unholy
Trinity and the damned
kings and peoples of
the earth under their
assault.
The damned seek to
stand up and defy God
cursing Him as on the
opposing lines of
battle.
Christ comes down!

NIV Revelation 10:1 Then I saw another
mighty angel coming down from heaven. He
was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above
his head; his face was like the sun, and his
legs were like fiery pillars. 2 He was holding
a little scroll, which lay open in his hand. He
planted his right foot on the sea and his left
foot on the land, 3 and he gave a loud
shout like the roar of a lion. When he
shouted, the voices of the seven thunders
spoke.
Christ puts enemies
under His feet

The enemies from the sea and land
will be subdued by Christ when His
Word comes in great terror and might
to judge them.
The glowing legs/feet sound familiar
The rainbow sounds familiar
Seven Thunders

The perfect mighty Word of God.
Christ comes down!

4 And when the seven thunders
spoke, I was about to write; but I
heard a voice from heaven say, "Seal
up what the seven thunders have said
and do not write it down." 5 Then the
angel I had seen standing on the sea
and on the land raised his right hand
to heaven.
Christ comes down!

6 And he swore by him who lives for
ever and ever, who created the
heavens and all that is in them, the
earth and all that is in it, and the sea
and all that is in it, and said, "There
will be no more delay!
Christ comes down!
THE SEVENTH TRUMPET!

7 But in the days when the seventh angel is
about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of
God will be accomplished, just as he
announced to his servants the prophets." 8
Then the voice that I had heard from
heaven spoke to me once more: "Go, take
the scroll that lies open in the hand of the
angel who is standing on the sea and on the
land."
Christ comes down!

9 So I went to the angel and asked him to
give me the little scroll. He said to me,
"Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach
sour, but in your mouth it will be as sweet
as honey." 10 I took the little scroll from the
angel's hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet
as honey in my mouth, but when I had
eaten it, my stomach turned sour. 11 Then I
was told, "You must prophesy again about
many peoples, nations, languages and
kings."
Christ comes down!



The Word that will judge the world goes
forth to the Church to preach this day.
It is pleasant to receive (sweet to the taste).
It is an actual sacrifice to our old sinful lives
and requires toil and tribulation to carry out
(sour to the stomach).
Now the Word goes out from the Church.
The Two Witnesses

NIV Revelation 11:1 I was given a reed like
a measuring rod and was told, "Go and
measure the temple of God and the altar,
and count the worshipers there. 2 But
exclude the outer court; do not measure it,
because it has been given to the Gentiles.
They will trample on the holy city for 42
months. 3 And I will give power to my two
witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260
days, clothed in sackcloth."
The Temple Measured


God counts, numbers, and is mindful
of those who are His own.
He is against and does not care for
those who would disregard Him and
His people. They abide in His wrath.
The Two Witnesses
42 months. The established time of the nations.
Gospel spreads throughout earth
Satan’s season
1,620 Days. The established time of the Church on earth.
3 ½ days persecuted.
The Two Witnesses – The OT
AND NT. This is that Word
that goes forth today.

4 These are the two olive trees and the two
lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.
5 If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from
their mouths and devours their enemies. This is
how anyone who wants to harm them must die. 6
These men have power to shut up the sky so that it
will not rain during the time they are prophesying;
and they have power to turn the waters into blood
and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as
often as they want.
The Two Witnesses



The Two Witnesses represent the Church.
Two can be the number of witness. The
two witnesses are also called olive trees
who bear fruit (a testimony) to be
consumed by the world.
Olive tree oil can be used for lamps.
The imagery suggest that the church are
those who provide for the light to shine and
who do, in fact, shine.
OT (Prophets) AND
NT (Apostles)

NIV Revelation 18:20 “Rejoice over
her, O heaven! Rejoice, saints and
apostles and prophets! God has
judged her for the way she treated
you.'"
The Two Witnesses will
appear to be in their demise
by the secular world near
the end.

7 Now when they have finished their
testimony, the beast that comes up from the
Abyss will attack them, and overpower and
kill them. 8 Their bodies will lie in the street
of the great city, which is figuratively called
Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord
was crucified. 9 For three and a half days
men from every people, tribe, language and
nation will gaze on their bodies and refuse
them burial.
The Two Witnesses



Two is the number of testimony.
NIV Matthew 18:16 But if he will not
listen, take one or two others along, so
that 'every matter may be established
by the testimony of two or three
witnesses.‘
NIV Matthew 18:20 For where two or
three come together in my name, there
am I with them."
The Two Witnesses





The true Church clinging to the Biblical faith and
witness of Jesus will seem dead to the world.
The world will rejoice in her demise.
The world gloats over her death as many rejoiced
over Christ’s.
Bodies were not to be left unburied by Mosaic Law.
The beast and the “great city where the Lord was
crucified” means that the world and falsely religious
authorities will work together for the demise of true
believers. They work will be deemed successful as
with our Lord in Jerusalem.
The Church is
Resurrected

10 The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over
them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts,
because these two prophets had tormented those
who live on the earth. 11 But after the three and a
half days a breath of life from God entered them,
and they stood on their feet, and terror struck
those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud
voice from heaven saying to them, "Come up here."
And they went up to heaven in a cloud, while their
enemies looked on.
The Two Witnesses
42 months and three ½ days
Gospel spreads throughout earth
Satan’s season
The Two Witnesses

13 At that very hour there was a
severe earthquake and a tenth of the
city collapsed. Seven thousand
people were killed in the
earthquake, and the survivors were
terrified and gave glory to the God of
heaven. 14 The second woe has
passed; the third woe is coming soon.
Final judgment


This earthquake of the damned before
God is the same mentioned in the
Vision of The Seven Bowls of Wrath.
The imagery is a place where the
damned are just before they are
plunged into eternal torment. The
portion here (the 7,000) drop into hell
before the rest.
The Last Great Shaking


NIV Hebrews 12:26 At that time his voice
shook the earth, but now he has promised,
“Once more I will shake not only the earth
but also the heavens.”
In God’s providence, some are just thrown
into hell right away at the beginning of
judgment. Perhaps, the very arrogant
before him who were leaders among those
now damned.
The Second Woe




Some give glory to God.
Some wonder if this means some will be
saved.
NIV Matthew 22:12 'Friend,' he asked, 'how
did you get in here without wedding
clothes?' The man was speechless.
This probably means that some will be
forced to acknowledge God is God when the
resurrection occurs and will attempt to
worship Him as a means to secure salvation.
The Seventh Trumpet

15 The seventh angel sounded his
trumpet, and there were loud voices in
heaven, which said: "The kingdom of
the world has become the kingdom of
our Lord and of his Christ, and he will
reign for ever and ever." 16 And the
twenty-four elders, who were seated
on their thrones before God, fell on
their faces and worshiped God,
The Seventh Trumpet

17 saying: "We give thanks to you,
Lord God Almighty, the One who is
and who was, because you have taken
your great power and have begun to
reign.
The Seventh Trumpet

18 The nations were angry; and your
wrath has come. The time has come
for judging the dead, and for
rewarding your servants the prophets
and your saints and those who
reverence your name, both small and
great-- and for destroying those who
destroy the earth."
The Seventh Trumpet:
The Third Woe

19 Then God's temple in heaven was
opened, and within his temple was
seen the ark of his covenant. And
there came flashes of lightning,
rumblings, peals of thunder, an
earthquake and a great hailstorm.
