Childhood
● Father left few weeks after born.
● Mother left him with grandmother to have a potentially better life.
● When Armstrong was 2 his mother reunited with his father to have his
sister~beatrice but his parents separated after.
● When he was 6 he moved back to his mother and took care of his sister in
Storyville.
Where Did He Get His Start
★ He got his start playing and
singing with a group of kids
★ His nickname was “satchel
mouth”
★ He eventually saved enough
money to buy a cornet ( a
instrument much like a trumpet).

trumpet player, learning new
techniques and songs

Daisy Parker
● In 1918 Louis met Daisy Parker and married.After he quit a job on a
riverboat in 1921 they divorced.
Lil Hardin
● In 1922 he met Lil Hardin when he was hired by king
Oliver. They married that very year.
● They lived apart for many years before divorcing in
1938.
Alpha Smith
● In the same year he married his longtime girlfriend
alpha
smith. And divorced in 1942.
Lucille Wilson
● The same year of his previous divorce he married Lucille
Wilson.
Life and death
● He claimed to have been born on July 4th. But
documents were found proving he was born on August
4th.
● He died July 6th.
● At his funeral more than 25,000 came to mourn his
death.
● He is still remembered as someone who spoke for civil
rights and as a great musician.
