What is social media?
• The term social media refers to web-based and
mobile applications that allow individuals and
organizations to create, engage, and share new
user-generated content, in digital environments
through multi-way communication.
• These tools tend to fall into two broad
categories: those primarily intended for social
networking, such as Facebook or Twitter, and
those that are designed for sharing usergenerated content such as blogs, YouTube, or
Flickr.

How to use Twitter
Tips on using SM in teaching
• Show students how to find and access
information through technology.
• Establish Clearly Communicated Boundaries.
• You can use SM to handle different areas in
your teaching; grammar, composition,
reading, literature…
• SM can be used to broadcast events like
exams and deadlines.
Pros and cons of using Social networks
in teaching
Pros:
- Making safe communities: among students and teachers
themselves.
- Gain access to available information, services, and
resources.
- Collaboration is encouraged
-Building an ongoing relationship with stakeholders: with
social media, the classroom can be a lively, 24/7 experience.
- Professional development
Cons and pros of using Social networks
in teaching
Cons:
- the dynamics of the users of the technology:
Must be managed by someone who understands social media.
- Lack of features.
- Can be a distracter if not used properly.
- It needs more than a presence.
- From an organizational and management perspective, the most
significant benefits and the most notable risks arise from the
democratizing nature of social media.
