M.A.I.N. Causes
• Militarism
• Alliances

Militarism
• When a nation’s armed
forces come to
dominate a country’s
national policy.
• It is also a glorification
of the military and war
itself.

Militarism
• European countries
had been building up
their military in the late
1800s
• The competition led to
rivalries, especially
between England and
Germany
The Great White Fleet
Alliances
• Signed treaties in which
each nation involved
pledges to defend the
other if attacked by an
aggressor.
• Basically, countries agreed
to help each other.

Alliances
• Countries thought
alliances would help
keep peace, but they
were wrong
• Many alliances were
made in secret, which
caused countries to
distrust each other
• Two major alliances!
The Sides
Allied Powers
• England
• France
• Russia
• Serbia
• Belgium
• Italy
• And later the United
States
Central Powers
• Germany
• Austria-Hungary
• Ottoman Empire (Turkey)
• Bulgaria
Imperialism
• Domination by one country
over the political, economic
or cultural life of another
country or region.
• Due to the Industrial
Revolution of the 1800s,
some European nations had a
large portion of the world
under their control.
• Think colonies!
Imperialism
• Europe fought
over overseas
markets, especially
in Africa
• The competition
caused rivalries
between nations
Nationalism
• Pride and patriotism in
one’s nation.
• In terms of WWI,
nationalism became
aggressive and subsequently
(because of this) a major cause of
international tension.
Nationalism
