Introduction
ROME

Rome is the capital city of Italy and of the
Lazio region, as well as the country's
largest and most populous city, with more
than 2.7 million residents. The
metropolitan area has a population of
about 4 million. It is located in the centralwestern portion of the Italian peninsula,
where the river Aniene joins the Tiber.
LONDON

London is the largest urban area and capital of
England and the United Kingdom. An important
settlement for two millennia, London's history
goes back to its founding by the Romans. Since
its settlement, London has been part of many
important movements and phenomena
throughout history, such as the English
Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, and the
Gothic Revival.
The city's core, the ancient City of London, still
retains its limited mediaeval boundaries; but
since at least the 19th century the name
"London" has also referred to the whole
metropolis which has developed around it.
Today the bulk of this conurbation forms the
London region of England and the Greater
London administrative area, with its own
elected mayor and assembly.
LAKE DISTRICT

The Lake District, also known as The Lakes
or Lakeland, is a rural area in North West
England. A popular holiday destination, it
is famous for its lakes and its mountains
(or fells), and its associations with the
early 19th century poetry and writings of
William Wordsworth and the Lake Poets.
COSTA BRAVA
•
The Costa Brava is a coastal region of
northeastern Catalonia, Spain, in the
comarques of Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà
and La Selva, in the province of Girona.
Costa is the Catalan and Spanish word for
'coast', and Brava means 'rugged' or
'wild'. The Costa Brava stretches from
Blanes, 60km northeast of Barcelona, to
the French border.

PARIS

It is situated on the River Seine, in
northern France, at the heart of the Îlede-France region (also known as the "Paris
Region"; French: Région parisienne). The
city of Paris within its administrative limits
(largely unchanged since 1860) has an
estimated population of 2,167,994
(January 2006).

The Paris unité urbaine (or urban area) extends
well beyond the administrative city limits and has
an estimated population of 9.93 million (in 2005).
The Paris aire urbaine (or metropolitan area) has a
population of nearly 12 million, and is one of the
most populated metropolitan areas in Europe.
