 Relevance of the partnership against the objectives of the project

Partners are located varied all over Europe (north-south / east-west). Because of this variation the
project partners themselves will experience cultural differences during the project. For a project
focusing on learning from cultural differences in planning, what better way then to experience it
yourself! Furthermore, an important part of our working method is a cross-cultural analysis. Partners
being spread over Europe, makes this working method possible.

Perfect match of different kind of organizations (universities, research institutes, consortia in regions)
all in their own way and from different angles concerned with cultural differences occurring in spatial
planning initiatives.
These two aspects make a good analysis and good recommendations on managing cultural differences in
further INTERREG initiatives and international planning processes possible. A contribution will be
made to bridge differences in planning cultures and to realising genuine cross-border, transnational
and interregional cooperation.
WHY?
Problems addressed/Objectives to be achieved
 Problems to be addressed:
 Contrasts in planning cultures (e.g. different perceptions of planning systems
and processes, different planning traditions, different decision making
systems) are one of the main obstacles in realizing genuine cross-border,
trans-national and interregional co-operation in INTERREG III
 Need of (future) players (regions, etc.) who wish to involve themselves in
cooperation for methods and starting points on managing cultural differences
in (further) INTERREG initiatives
 Role of cultural context in INTERREG planning processes is underexposed in
activities of INTERACT points and INTERACT secretariat
WHY?
Problems addressed/Objectives to be achieved
 Main objectives (Relevance for the INTERACT Programme):
 To articulate and exchange best practices of how differences in planning
culture in INTERREG III program and projects are managed
 To formulate conclusions and recommendations for managing cultural
differences in further INTERREG initiatives and international planning
processes in order to bridge the differences in planning cultures within
INTERREG initiatives to contribute to the successfulness of the INTERREG III
program and projects
 To disseminate in different ways (report, website, etc.) information on
managing cultural differences in further INTERREG initiatives to INTERREG III
project managers and promoters, coordination officers (INTERREG
secretariats and INTERACT points and secretariat) and policy makers (EU,
national and regional) to contribute to realising true cross-border (strand A),
trans-national (strand B) and interregional (strand C) cooperation in the
international initiatives such as INTERREG projects and will enhance future
involvement of players who wish to involve themselves in cooperation.
