Using the Planner Effectively
• At KS4, the planner should
be a Summary of the

In Y10 it is an exam
resource and will make a
significant difference in
helping your son/daughter
prepare for their GCSEs.

MRS MACHIN
Mental Health Needs
• Everyone has mental health needs
• Good mental health, like good physical health is
important for everyone
• “The capacity to live a full, productive life as well as
the flexibility to deal with its ups and downs. In
children and young people it is especially about the
capacity to learn, enjoy friendships to meet
challenges, to develop talents and capabilities”
• (Young Minds)

WE ARE ALL HUMAN!
• Think about how we cope when we suffer
emotional distress?
• If children are happy and healthy and
mentally well then their academic success
will follow
• We have to put our faith in the
professionals
• We need support too
Support for the child
•School staff
•School nurse

• 60% examination (one reading and writing paper – end of Year

Exams
• Reading and writing skills addressed throughout Years 10 and 11
• Examination practice every half term
• Poetry studied in both years
• Year 10 focusses heavily on controlled assessment; year 11
focuses more on exam preparation
Bands, NOT grades
• Band 5 – ‘sophisticated and impressive’
• Band 4 – ‘confident and assured’
• Band 3 – ‘clear and consistent’
• Band 2 – ‘some’
• Band 1 – ‘limited’
• Only a mark in Band 5 stands any chance of an A*
• All controlled assessments MUST be securely in Band 4
What can you do?
• Encourage your son/daughter to read as widely as possible –
newspapers, websites, fiction and non-fiction
• Ensure that they have read the set texts in advance of studying
them
• Help them to monitor their progress
• Keep encouraging them to use the Key Skills Document
GCSE SCIENCE
MRS AXELBY
RECAP
• AQA Specifications for all courses
• All students began GCSE science in yr 9 and
topics in chemistry, physics and biology were
studied
• There have been no changes to the content of
GCSE since it was introduced 3 years ago
• Remember…ALL examinations and controlled
assessment are submitted at the end of the year
and there are NO opportunities for resits!
A reminder of our routes through
key stage 4 science
Triple science
• Students follow three separate GCSEs in biology,
chemistry and physics
• Each GCSE is 25% Investigative Skills Assessment
(ISA) and 75% examination
• ISA is submitted at the end of the course in y11
• All examinations are taken at the end of y11. Three
formal examinations are sat for each subject area
(9 IN TOTAL)
A reminder of our routes through
key stage 4 science…
Core Science
• This course began its delivery in yr 9 and is
completed in yr 10
NEW CHANGE…
NEW CHANGE…
• There will now to no formal examinations in core
science at the end of yr 10. The core science
examinations will be take at the end of yr 11
• The delivery of core science will be completed at
approx. Easter time and then ALL students will
begin to study additional science
• The controlled assessment for core science will be
sat in yr 10 and the controlled assessment for
additional science will be sat in year 11
• Core science students will sit a total of 6 formal
exams at the end of yr 11 and will achieve two GCSEs
Resources to support your child through GCSE
Science
•Revision guides available through the
school for £3
•Access to a web- based resource called
(it is being updated at
present)
Science presents various challenges for the student
This is how you can support us in supporting your
child…
• Encourage them to revise continuously rather than
something that happens a week before an exam
• Encourage them to take the internal assessments
seriously – these inform their progress data
• Large amount of technical language – encourage use of
glossaries and key word cards
• Ensure that they have access to resources for revision
• Encourage them to identify weak areas and use
www.kerboodle.com to revisit
• Take advantage of independent study activities which
will be available through the VLE - there is always
something that can be done
GCSE MFL
MISS APPLEYARD
GCSE MFL
• Builds on foundations of KS3 course
• Based around a series of topics that are explored
through the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and
writing) in an authentic and meaningful way
• Students build on familiar vocabulary and are constantly
encouraged to extend their knowledge to enable them
to deal with most situations that they might encounter
in French or Spanish speaking countries
• Work is marked in accordance with the WJEC (Welsh
Joint Education Committee) mark scheme as it would be
in their final examination
How is MFL assessed?
WJEC – Exams
• 20% - Listening Exam – Summer of year 11
• 20% - Reading Exam – Summer of year 11
- Each skill can be tested at either higher or foundation level,
students can ‘mix and match’ to maximize the chance of the best
grade possible
How is MFL assessed?
WJEC – Controlled Assessment
• 30% - Speaking controlled assessment
- 2 x speaking assessments – the presentation and
the general conversation
- The first will be completed during the summer
term of year 10 (students will be given plenty of
advance notice)
• 30% - Writing controlled assessment
- 2 x 300 word essays written under controlled
conditions in class
- The first will be completed during the first term of
year 10 (students will be given plenty of advance
notice)
Expectations
• Learn as you go along! Learning a language is an
accumulative process – last minute revision is
almost pointless
• Adapt vocabulary! Develop the skill of exploiting
familiar phrases in unfamiliar situations
• Stay organised! This the key to success (no set text
books mean notes are crucial)
• Participate in class! Make the most of every
opportunity – exchanges, extra conversation
lessons (often with native speakers), use the
internet, radio, etc.
