By the end of this year….

• Your child will have completed a significant proportion of their exams • They will have completed their GCSE English Literature • They will have completed their 1 year option GCSE • They will have completed their Core Science GCSE • They will have completed controlled assessments which count for a significant amount of their final grade • As well as having covered over half the course for their other, 2 year subjects

• This year is JUST as crucial as year 11 in determining academic success

• Read through the curriculum booklet with them and ensure that you are both/all clear about what is needed for success in each subject.

• Read the newsletter each week for up to date information about what is happening in each year group, in particular after school revision/extra –curricular opportunities. These are also all published in a regularly updated leaflet.

• Ensure that they attend school every day.

Excellent attendance is key to success.

Check their planner daily

• Your child should be receiving a stamp EVERY lesson to indicate they have followed the “Learn and Achieve” expectations.

• Following these will greatly enhance their chances of success

• If your child has a code in their planner – it means they have not followed the “Learn and Achieve” expectations • This means they are damaging their chances of success • Please discuss any codes with them and help them to change their behaviours

Look out for progress data being sent home after data collections

Questions to ask about this are… • Is the P.O. ( projected outcome) the same (or better) than the MEG (Minimum Expected Grade)? If not – there is a problem and this needs to be discussed • Is the attitude grade at 1 or 2 ?

– if not there is serious risk of underperformance.

Ensure that Homework is completed • All our research shows that study outside the classroom will enhance your child’s chance of success.

• It is essential as we move towards the exams that ALL homework is completed to the best of your child’s ability • No homework = 60 minutes supported homework detention • Don’t forget – homework club is available every evening in the LRC with staff on hand to support with completion • Please encourage your child to attend this if struggling

• In the Summer your child will be involved in a whole week of Careers Information/Education • Having a career plan and knowing what is needed to achieve this plan will help your child to be as focussed as possible this year • Please take time to discuss this with your child and encourage them to see the careers advisor

Year 10 English

This year, your child will complete the English Literature course. This includes the following components: -Written coursework (40% of the final mark) -Examination focusing on the analysis of Romeo and Juliet and unseen poetry (60% of the final mark). Homework is provided in a printed booklet for your child. They will be set an extended piece of homework every fortnight. http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/english

Year 10 Mathematics

Your child will study the following units this year: – Fractions, decimals and percentages – Handling data – Algebra – Indices, surds and circle theorems Each Unit will focus on a deeper learning of Mathematical Skills and their applications.

Each unit will conclude with: – A focussed assessment paper – Detailed analysis of your child’s performance – Two weeks of re-teach time to address any misconceptions Your child will receive weekly homework based upon a range of examination topics

Year 10 Science

Curriculum Your child is completing the AQA GCSE Core science course this year. The coursework will be completed on ‘immersion’ days, and there will be 3 terminal exams in May/June.

Assessment Your child completes an extended writing exam question each week that is marked out of 6, with comments to aid improvement. At the end of each topic they complete a past GCSE paper which is graded. Pupils will also sit a mock exam before the Christmas and Easter holidays.

Homework Homework is set on doddle.co.uk and is made up of revision resources and quizzes so teachers/pupils can monitor weekly progress out of lessons too. It is set every Monday, to be completed by Friday.

Rewards Pupils have the additional opportunity to be rewarded in science by collecting five badges. A pupil can gain a badge if on a data collection they beat their targets.

Revision Pupils have the opportunity to do extra revision after school on Tuesday and at breakfast club, before school, on a Thursday and Friday (breakfast is included in these sessions).
