Transcript What does AFSP do? - American Foundation for Suicide

What does AFSP do?
We work to save lives.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the
leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated
to understanding and preventing suicide through research,
education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with
mental disorders and those impacted by suicide.
The Boston Chapter, established in 1991, has been delivering
educational programs, providing support for suicide survivors and
working to reduce the stigma of suicide for over 20 years.
About A Sip in the Park
This year will mark the 4th Annual
“A Sip in the Park benefit, which brings
together 200 new and old friends to taste
craft beer and fine wine at Boston's historic
Fenway Park, raising important funds to
support the work of AFSP’s Boston Chapter
Event sponsors are prominently
showcased and thanked throughout the
event and enable us to broaden our
reach and further spread the message of
awareness, prevention, and the continued
need for dialogue and advocacy around
mental health disorders and suicide
A Sip in the Park 2014
A Sip in the Park 2014
At our 2014 A Sip in the Park, AFSP was proud to
honor Brigadier General (ret.) Jack Hammond, the
Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General
Hospital’s Home Base Program with our “AFSP
Lifesaver Leadership Award”, recognizing their
ongoing leadership and commitment to saving lives
through suicide awareness prevention programs for
returning veterans and their families.
Our Programs & Your Support
• Your support of A Sip in the Park directly funds AFSP’s work to:
– Research – Fund multiple national research initiatives to better understand and prevent
suicide through neurobiology, genetics, clinical treatment, etc.
– Advocate – Work to educate leaders in state capitals and Washington, D.C., about mental
health support for returning veterans and their families.
– Educate – Provide education and training for local teachers and staff to learn the signs of
depression and mental illness with training materials including “More Than Sad, Teen
Depression” for high schools, and “The Truth about Suicide: Real Stories of Depression in
College.”
– Support – Fund survivor day events and provide ongoing volunteer support outreach
through out survivor outreach program to newly bereaved families and loved ones coping
with the loss of a loved one throughout Eastern Massachusetts.
– Innovate – You fund pioneering local AFSP programs such as a first-of-its kind partnership
with Boston Police on an interactive screening Program, to help identify officers who may be
at risk for suicide.
