EDUC 390 October 4, 2007 Getting Started: Read the article from the Rock Hill Herald entitled, “Too Many Struggle.” In your nametag beside 10/4, list at least two issues that threaten student success. Now listen… Agenda: 1. Questions about assessment 2. Linking assessment to classroom management (and vice versa) 3. Considering our past; thinking about our future CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT Points to Consider Consider your own experiences… Social Skills Assessment With a small group of classmates, discuss the points on the back of the assessment. How have these experiences influenced your judgments about classroom management? CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT Points to Consider From the text… - “Conscious, premeditated caring” - Learning to like all students - Examining our own models *Gathering data - Letting out students know we care CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT Points to Consider How does this information relate to… • A Set of Ideals • Service to all despite conditions • Nurture all students; recognize value regardless of actual achievements • Moral and Ethical Principles • Developing individual relationships based upon care, empathy, trust, loyalty, and respect • Developing society based upon democratic principles of equity and collaborative decision-making • Common Good • Moving beyond personal stake • Protecting of individual rights • Liberation and Transformation • Recognize injustice; establish goals to transform CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT Points to Consider We examine classroom management through three perspectives: Our BELIEFS. Our EXPERIENCES. The beliefs and experiences of OTHERS. NEVER lose sight of the connection between classroom management and achievement. CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT Points to Consider “Those teaching must reconcile two factors: their desire to meet students’ learning needs in an individual, personal manner; and a system that requires uniform conduct, treatment, and outcomes. The demand now is on the teacher to accommodate student diversity in a climate of standardized results… Practicing teachers repeatedly mention the need for teachers to be aware of what they believe about children’s capabilities. Those personal values influence perceptions and ultimately affect teacher expectations and practices. Teachers need to reflect on their own belief systems and assumptions, especially in instances where their social backgrounds and experiences differ greatly from those of the students they teach…Knowing one’s own cultural and social identity leads to a better understanding of students and their identities and experiences” (Gehrke, 2005, p. 15). CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT Connection to PMP Part Two: Classroom Climate Classroom management should support equitable education and treatment of all students. With that in mind how will you create a classroom that has a respectful, accepting, climate in which all students feel safe valued and one where all students have access to knowledge? Phrased your answer in terms of specific actions you will take limiting your response to 150 words or less.
