By the time you read this 149 acres of the rainforest will be destroyed. Grasslands will be burned forcing their inhabitants onto the endangered list. By the end of this hour 6 species will have become extinct, gone forever!

TASK You will be joining a research team in a virtual expedition around the world. You will explore each biome to discover how the abiotic factors influence the life forms that live there and the inter-relationships that create the delicate balance found in an ecosystem.

You will also study the adaptations that enable organisms to be successful in their respective biomes.

As you travel through each biome you will keep a journal of your discoveries so that upon your return you can teach others to understand nature and love it as you do.

PROCESS

Introduction

Evaluation Each research team will have a zoologist, a botanist and a research manager. Conservation missions are always short of money so you must switch roles on each trip.

The field research manager is responsible for determining the abiotic elements that define the region, They must also determine the impact that humans have had on the area.

The botanist will identify at least two kinds of plants and discuss what characteristics help in it’s success. They will determine how their plants interact in that specific biome.

The zoologist will describe at least two animals that live in that biome. They must determine what adaptations help this animal to be successful and how these animals interact in their biome.

As you complete your travel through each biome you must compile your journal entries into a research paper explaining the interactions of that biome. Use what you have learned in class to develop that understanding and to support your explanation. Your paper must be detailed enough to allow the reader to develop an understanding of the complex inter-relationships that compose an ecosystem so that they also may be able to develop the understanding needed for them to love nature and join you in your mission to conserve.
