Where does color come from?
• A ray of light is the
source of all color.
• Without light, color
does not exist.
• Light is broken down
into colors of the
spectrum. You can
often see a variety of
colors when you look
at something like a
rainbow.
• The color wheel is a basic
tool we use when working
with colors.
• It is based on the
standard color theory
known as the
Brewster/Prang theory.
• There are 12
hues in the
spectrum of
color.
• They are
divided into
three
categories…
Creating Your Color Wheel
• As I introduce the colors
to you, you will need to
use a colored pencil to
complete your own color
wheel for your portfolio.
• This color wheel will be
your reference tool for
color in Interior Design, so
you need to be accurate
and careful to place the
colors in the correct
spaces on your paper.
The Primary Colors
• Red, Yellow, and
Blue
• These colors
cannot be
combined from
mixing any colors
together.
The Secondary Colors
• Green, violet, and
orange
• Made by
combining the
Primary colors
together.
YELLOW + RED = ORANGE
RED + BLUE = Violet
BLUE + YELLOW =GREEN
The Tertiary Colors
• Yellow-Orange,
Red-Orange, RedViolet, Blue-Violet,
Blue-Green, YellowGreen.
• Made by combining
a primary and a
secondary hue.
YELLOW + ORANGE = YELLOW-ORANGE
• Named by the
RED + ORANGE = RED-ORANGE
Primary color first. RED + VIOLET / PURPLE = RED-VIOLET
BLUE + VIOLET / PURPLE = BLUE-VIOLET
BLUE + GREEN = BLUE-GREEN
YELLOW + GREEN = YELLOW-GREEN
Your Finished Color Wheel
• Your completed
color wheel should
look like this one.
• It will be placed in
your portfolio so
you will be able to
use it as a
reference as we
complete our
projects class.
