Industry Consultation Explained

The Consultation process: – The Industry Consultation period is for BT Wholesale to consult with CPs on the future of products on the 21CN, before making final decisions on its 21CN portfolio – An Industry Consultation document is a set of proposals for comment, for comment from Industry, so the information shared with you today is not set in stone – After the consultation period is complete and BT has considered all responses from the CPs, it will issue a Consultation Closing Document • Some CPs have sent BT their responses to a set of questions from the Consultation document • The Closure document publishes those responses (anonymously), tries to answers any questions raised by CPs and set out BT’s final statements – After the Closure Document is issued the Consultation is closed and BT Wholesale will commence development of the 21CN TDM portfolio – The statements within the Consultation document are issued by BTWholesale and only refer to BTWholesale products – Global Services are treated as any other CP in the Consultation process and therefore are not in a position to provide full plans on their 21CN portfolio until sometime after the final Consultation position is published Page 4 © British Telecommunications plc

Utilities’ FAQs – Design

• • • • • • What performance can I expect from the 21CN Native TDM solution?

– 21CN TDM will be based on Next Generation SDH and will be carried natively in 21CN – We are aiming to offer the same customer experience as current 20CN product performance What happened to TDM emulation?

– BT’s feasibility on TDM emulation showed that it cannot meet the delay or jitter requirements for strict TDM performance, so BT does not currently plan to introduce an emulated TDM service. – BT may reconsider this position if the technology matures to a performance level acceptable in the marketplace Will BT need to change my current access network?

– It is anticipated that the majority of 20CN TDM access network will be retained to work with the 21CN – This also applies to PPC Point Of Handover & 3 rd party tails Can customers see BT 21CN node data & rollout plans?

– CPs have access to some of this information, end customers ordinarily would not What is the life expectancy of alternative 21CN products?

– We have no plans for withdrawal of 21CN products currently but would expect to withdraw them when they are no longer viable, due to low demand What resilience & switching options will be available for TDM on 21CN?

– Similar resilience configurations would be available to those currently provided Page 7 © British Telecommunications plc

Utilities’ FAQs – Service

• • • • • • • When will customers get to see 21CN TDM product pricing?

– This is likely to be late 2008, at the earliest Would there be a fixed time between stop sell and product withdrawal?

– We expect that to be no shorter than 2 years but there will not be a fixed time as it will depend on how far ahead of the 20CN platform closure the stop sell date is issued When will customers have an indication of product mapping and stop sell dates?

– The current product mapping plan is shown on slide 6 – Stop sell dates announcement will be co-ordinated with their 21CN replacement launch announcement Can BT clarify what is meant by ‘support services on 20CN until Q1, 2014

subject to demand

?

– If the migration of services away from the 20CN platforms occurs more quickly than expected, then BT may decide to close the platform before 2014 What is happening with EPS type circuits & non-own exchange circuits – Analogue circuits, non-own exchange, would be mapped to a 64Kb 21CN alternative – Analogue circuits, own exchange, are not impacted by this consultation Life expectancy of alternative 21CN products – No current end of life dates for 21CN TDM products Do utilities have to repay connection charges when migrating to 21CN – Only when changing bandwidth, or when moving to a different product i.e Ethernet Page 8 © British Telecommunications plc
