Government changes to option
subjects in Key Stage 4
 A focus on GCSEs and a narrower range of high quality
vocational qualifications by limiting the number of GCSE
equivalent subjects such as NVQs; VCERT; BTEC
qualifications that count in excess of the equivalent of 1
GCSE
Information about some option
subjects
 If pupils wish to choose an option with more practical music
elements then they should choose Drama – Performance skills
 Where they can choose
 In Art, Engineering and Physical Education, there will be the
opportunity to do either VCERT or GCSE depending on ability
 Graphic Design is not an Art option, though they will be
elements of it in the course content.
Progress 8
 The Progress 8 measure is designed to encourage schools to
offer a broad and balanced curriculum at KS4, and reward
schools for the teaching of all their pupils.
 The new measure will be based on students’ progress
measured across eight subjects: English; mathematics; three
other English Baccalaureate (EBacc) subjects (sciences,
computer science, geography, history and languages); and
three further subjects, which can be any other approved, highvalue arts, academic, or vocational qualification
Progress 8
 The Progress 8 score will always be determined by dividing the
points total by 10 (the eight qualifications with English and
mathematics counting double)
 It can be of more benefit to less-able students to strive for
good grades (and hence score more points) in fewer subjects,
with the emphasis on doing well in English and mathematics,
than to take more subjects but achieve lower grades overall.
