How to Setup a Home Network
Prerequisites
Before you begin…
• Your computers need a way to connect
This can be done with a router and/or modem
• Ethernet or USB cables (to connect to modem)
• Wifi- connect your computers wirelessly
Prerequisites
Before you begin…
• Disconnect from the internet
• Turn-off firewalls
Internet third-parties and firewalls can interfere
with the setup of your home network. Turning
them can make the process easier.
Step 1: Connect Hardware & Cables
• Turn on your networking device
• Connect the computers to the router
▫ (wirelessly w/ Wifi or manually with cables)
Step 2: Run the network wizard
• Click Start , then Control Panel
• Select View network status and tasks
• Click Set up a new network

• Select Set up a new network, then click Next
• Follow the onscreen instructions
Step 3: Connect to the network
• Return to the Network and Sharing Center
• Click Connect to a network
• Select your network, then click Connect
Step 3: Connect to the network
• Enter network security key (if setup)
• Select Home Network
• Select which files to share, then click Next
Step 4: Allow Discovery and File Sharing
• On Control Panel, select Set up file sharing
• Click Change advanced sharing settings
Step 4: Allow Discovery and File Sharing
• Turn on network discovery and file and
printer sharing
• Click Save changes
Check…
• Click Start , then Computer (or My Computer)
• You should see your new network
