Two-way Left Turn Lanes v. Raised Medians
Current Conclusions
•
Raised medians are safer for both vehicles
and pedestrians
•
At low to moderate volumes:
Two-way left turn lanes improve safety
•
At high volumes and with many driveways:
Two-way left turn lanes encourage many crashes
•
Businesses and drivers don’t like raised
medians
•
No evidence that raised medians hurt
businesses
Research Results
•
In Des Moines, IA, adding raised median
decreased crashes by 50%
•
In central New Jersey, raised median
decreased pedestrian crashes by 28%
•
At 1000 paired intersections in 30 cities:
At higher volumes, raised medians reduced pedestrian risk by 46%
Marked crosswalks were more dangerous at higher volumes
