The Propitiation For Our Sins
1 John. 4:10
“In this is love, not that we loved God,
but that He loved us and sent His Son
to be the propitiation for our sins.”
• Jesus is our Shield
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• God is a “JUST” - God and demands Justice
for Sins committed.
• That “justice” is satisfied through Christ.
But how?
• For many years I heard the word “Propitiation”
and never really understood what it really met
to me a sinner or a Christian.
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• If we don’t understand it – How can it really
mean anything to us or for that matter how can
the death of Christ mean anything to us as it
should?
• There is a paragraph in a book that I purposely
purchased just for the sake of that Paragraph and
how it relates to Propitiation and the Atonement.
• The book is “Great Doctrine of the Bible” by
William Evans – Published by Moody Press.
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• “…Light and erroneous views of the atonement
come from light and erroneous views of Sin. If
sin is regarded as merely an offence against
man, a weakness of human nature, a mere
disease, rather than a rebellion, transgression,
and enmity against God, therefore, something
condemning and punishable, we shall not, of
course, see any necessity for the atonement.”

The Propitiation For Our Sins
I. Sin?
1. Sin is a transgression of God’s Laws. I John 3:4
“Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for
sin is the transgression of the law.
2. Sin elicits the wrath of God, sin is absolutely foreign to
God's nature. He is all holy, when sin comes near to God, it is
something that angers him.
• Sin separates us from God - Isaiah 59:1,2 1. “Behold,
the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save;
neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2. But your
iniquities have separated between you and your God,
and your sins have hid [his] face from you, that he will
not hear.”
The Propitiation For Our Sins
3. The Wage of Sin is death – Romans 6:23 “For
the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is]
eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”
4. God is a “JUST” God and demands Justice for
Sins committed.
Psalms 89: 13 “Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is
thy hand, [and] high is thy right hand. 14. Justice
and judgment [are] the habitation of thy throne:
mercy and truth shall go before thy face.”
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• And it is a “fearful thing” to fall into the wrath
of God.
• Hebrews 10:31 “[It is] a fearful thing to fall
into the hands of the living God.”
• Consider the following passages………
Consider the following passages….
• Romans 1:16-21
16* ¶ For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of
God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and
also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is
revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “BUT THE
RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.” 18* For the wrath of
God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in
unrighteousness, 19 ¶ because that which is known about God is
evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For
since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal
power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being
understood through what has been made, so that they are
without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not
honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their
speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

• Ephesians 5:3-6
3 Ҧ But immorality or any impurity or greed must
not even be named among you, as is proper among
saints; 4* and there must be no filthiness and silly
talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but
rather giving of thanks. 5* For this you know with
certainty, that no immoral or impure person or
covetous man, who is an idolater, has an
inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6*
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for
because of these things the wrath of God comes
upon the sons of disobedience.”
Continued……..
• Colossians 3:5-7
5* Ҧ Therefore consider the members of
your earthly body as dead to immorality,
impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed,
which amounts to idolatry. 6* For it is
because of these things that the wrath of
God will come upon the sons of disobedience,
7* and in them you also once walked, when
you were living in them.”
The Propitiation For Our Sins
I Peter 4:18 “And if the righteous scarcely be
saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner
appear?”
5. The wrath of God is against sin. And that wrath
will occasionally be manifested in our current
times as God puts His foot down and draws the
line and says I will allow sin to go no further and
what it is doing to siege the earth.
The Propitiation For Our Sins
6. The wrath of God will be revealed most fully
when Jesus comes again and there will be the
permanent judgment. The Bible says that those
who know the Lord will of course go to live with
Him and yet at the same time others will be cast
into a place that the Bible calls in the original
language Gehenna.
Matthew 25:23 - Revelation 20:13,14 respectively
The Propitiation For Our Sins
II. God’s wrath is not like man’s wrath becauseNumber 1, it is always judicial. It is the wrath of the
all perfect judge being administered in judgment.
Roman 2:5
“But because of your stubbornness and
unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for
yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the
righteous judgment of God,”
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• God's judgment and the wrath that will come from
it is going to be righteous.
• Secondly - God's wrath is going to be something
that men or women choose for themselves.
Ephesians 5:6 says "... the wrath of God comes
upon the sons of disobedience."--- the ones who
choose disobedience.
• People will be lost because they choose to sin. And
when I choose to sin, then the wage of that sin is
death. Romans 6:23 tells me and that death literally
means a separation from God and it is an eternal
separation from God.
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• And that illustrates the problem we all have
because Romans 3:23 says, “all have sinned and
fallen short of God's glory”.
• Man is in a terrible state.
• And that's where the word/concept/meaning of
"Propitiation" comes in.
The Propitiation For Our Sins
III. You see God doesn't want to see a single
one of us suffer from His wrath, so God has
made available another choice for man.
• II Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack concerning
his promise, as some men count slackness;
but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing
that any should perish, but that all should
come to repentance.”
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• John 3:36
36* “He who believes in the Son has eternal life;
but he who does not obey the Son will not see life,
but the wrath of God abides on him.”
• Romans 5:8,9
8* “But God demonstrates His own love toward
us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died
for us. 9* Much more then, having now been
justified by His blood, we shall be saved from
the wrath of God through Him.”
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• When we choose to believe in and obey Jesus,
when we choose to obey the gospel, when we
come up from the waters of baptism as a
Christian and follow the Lord,
WE are saved from God's wrath.
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• Propitiation literally means to deflect wrath.
It literally means to let it bounce off. In
another form the word was used to define a
shield that a warrior would take into battle.
Jesus deflected the wrath that is due us. He
is our propitiation.
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• He APPEASES God’s sense of Justice by taking
our sin, our guilt of sin upon Himself thereby
deflecting God’s Wrath from us to Him by His
death on the Cross saving us from eternal
death in Hell.
• I Peter 2:24 “Who his own self bare our sins
in his own body on the tree, that we, being
dead to sins, should live unto righteousness:
by whose stripes ye were healed.”
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• 1 John. 2:1
2 “and He Himself is the propitiation for our
sins; and not for ours only, but also for those
of the whole world.”
• This is something very special. He was and is
the shield, he was and is the deflector of
wrath for my sin and your sin, for the sins of
the whole world.
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• Romans 3:24 - 26
24* “being justified as a gift by His grace through
the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25*
whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in
His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate
His righteousness, because in the forbearance of
God He passed over the sins previously
committed; 26* for the demonstration, I say, of
His righteousness at the present time, so that He
would be just and the justifier of the one who
has faith in Jesus.”
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• 1 John. 4:10
10 “In this is love, not that we loved God, but
that He loved us and sent His Son to be the
propitiation for our sins.”
• Jesus not only paid my debt to God, He
shields me from the wrath that God is aiming
at my sin.
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• 2 Corinthians 5:21
21 “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin
on our behalf, so that we might become the
righteousness of God in Him.”
• The one who had no sin became sin. He took
the wrath. He deflected it away so that you
and I could live.
The Propitiation For Our Sins
• SO Now - What does the word PROPITIATION
mean to you?
What Must One do To Live?
• In Acts 2 the people heard (Romans 10:17) the
Gospel Message, they believed (Mark 16:16), what
they heard and asked, “Men and brethren “What
shall we do?”, they were told to Repent and be
Baptized (Vs. 38) in order to wash away their sins
(Acts 22:16), their baptism would have followed
their Confession of their belief in Christ as the Living
Son of God (Acts 8:36, 37 & 38). Once this has been
accomplished, one has “put on Christ” and is now
At-One with God, God now sees you through the
Blood (Appeasement) of His Son.
You can then be made Alive. Don’t You want LIVE?
