over 65 million.
o Every year, there are
approximately 15 million new
cases of STDs.
o By age 24, it is believed that 1 in 4
Americans will contract an STD.

o Oral medication: antiviral meds
like Acyclovir, Valtrex.
How is HERPES cured?
o It isn’t!

Baby born to mother during
an active herpes outbreak.

How is HIV/AIDS Treated?
o Initial weight gain to prevent
“wasting.”
o Drug cocktails to prevent viral
replication and entry of virus
into uninfected cells.

living with HIV/AIDS.
oIn 2009, 48,100 new cases of
HIV/AIDS were diagnosed; 166
were under the age of 13.

Complications
o If untreated… can lead to Pelvic
Inflammatory Disease (PID) :
infection of fallopian tubes and
pelvic cavity in women
o PID can cause ectopic pregnancy
and/or infertility.

reported to CDC from 50 states and the
District of Columbia.
o 1990-2010 reported chlamydia cases
increases from 160.2 to 426.0 cases per
100,000 population.

o thick, yellow discharge from penis and
vagina
o burning with urination

o Blindness in babies at

eyes of every newborn.

SYPHILIS
Caused by: BACTERIA
Treponema pallidum
Syphilis symptoms
Progresses in stages:
o STAGE I: Red sores (chancres)
appear.
o STAGE II: non itching rash
o STAGE III: attacks heart, blood
vessels, and nervous system.
How do you get Syphilis?
o sexual contact
o skin-to-skin contact
How is Syphilis treated?
o Antibiotics
** can only be cured if found in early stages!

o Over 36,000 cases of syphilis in
2006.
o9,756 cases of primary and secondary
(P&S) syphilis.
o The incidence of P&S syphilis was
highest:
o women 20 to 24 years of age
o men 35 to 39 years of age

HPV Symptoms
o Over 50 forms of this virus
are known to infect the
genitals.
o Some have no symptoms
o Others cause warts on the
genitals and surrounding skin
Complications
o Causes cell changes that
lead to cervical cancer
o HPV is the leading cause of
death from cervical cancer
in the U.S.
How is HPV treated?
o Removal of growths or abnormal
cervical tissue by surgery or
freezing.
o For external growths, prescription
medication can be applied.
o Guardasil shot for prevention of
only 3 types of HPV types that are
leading causes of cervical cancer.

o Approx. 6.2 million new
infections occur annually.
oAt least 50% of sexually active
men and women will acquire HPV
infection at some point in their
life.
