Newsletter ~ June 2009 Busy Term for Greenhill’s Pathway Group Greenhill’s VIP12 Pathways Group has had an extremely busy term. Their focus this term has been on community participation. Projects have included the production of a Mural, Work experience, Marketing Masterclass, Employer visits and working on producing a disability leaflet. Mural Project Working in collaboration with pupils from St Teilo’s RC School the group produced a 48ft x 4ft mural around the theme ‘Seven days of Creation’. The designs for the mural were created by the junior school pupils which were then reproduced by pupils from Greenhill’s VIP12 group. The mural has been housed at St Teilo’s school where a very successful and well deserved unveiling event took place. Pictured above is Ethan Law with teacher Jenny Llewellyn working on the mural Work Experience All members of the group have been out on work experience. Accessing work experience for the most vulnerable students is often a difficult task but when coupled with a physical disability the task is even more difficult and in some cases impossible. But for David Sharland who has a passion for cars to be able to have work experience within a garage was a dream come true for him. Mansells Hyundai Garage in Kilgetty provided David with his work experience. Although David is in a wheelchair he was fully involved in the running of the garage, ordering parts and polishing cars just two of the tasks he participated in. Employers play a vital role in providing students with experience of the world of work and Greenhill’s Pathway Group is extremely thankful to all the employers who provided work experience for the students. Sincere thanks go to Mansells Garage who were committed and stuck with the arduous task of risk assessment in order to provide David with a really meaningful work experience. Other employers who provided work experience for members of the group include: Pembroke Dock Community School, Puddle Ducks Nursery, Fourcroft Hotel, Tenby, Art Dept Greenhill School, Jason Thomas-Technician Music Dept Greenhill School & David Morgan – Caretaker, Greenhill School Pictured Left is David Sharland with members of staff at Mansells Hyundai Garage. The new initiative which has been called ‘xtr@stp’ offers a range of after school enrichment activities across three zones. The three zones which include a ‘Chill Zone’, a ‘Skill zone’ and a ‘Learn Zone’ offer something for everyone whether its hanging out with their mates socialising in the Chill Zone, developing skills in the Skill Zone or learning something new in the Learn Zone. The activities are run by LSAs and are open to all STP students including students with ALN every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Activities are designed to promote social inclusion, community participation, improve academic learning and most importantly FUN! The initiative has proved very popular amongst the students with all three zones attracting good numbers. Above are details of the activities provided within the three zones Keeping in Touch Project As part of the NEETS strategy and as an alternative to the summer school held at the PRU last year the KIT team will be taking to the roads this year. Commencing the first week of June 09 the team will be out and about in the Zone Bus two days a week covering the whole of the County. Going out into the communities will give the team greater access to work with a larger number of young people. They will be providing services relating to Debt Management, Training & Education. Finance and Independent Living Skills. In keeping with the initiative of getting out and about and being visible within the communities the KIT team will be visiting local training providers on a weekly basis providing services to their learners with the aim of keeping them engaged. Pictured above is the easily recognisable Zone Bus that will be touring the County this summer. The Zone Bus will also be attending the County Show in August where the KIT team will be available to provide advice and guidance. Learning Zone at the County Show – Your Choice, Your Future If you’re coming to the County Show this year (18-20 August), then pay a visit to the Learning Zone on the corner of Main Avenue and Band Avenue. The Learning Zone is a one stop venue incorporating all the training and educational choices in Pembrokeshire for adults over 16 years of age. Visitors will be able to get advice about learning new skills and gaining qualifications that can help in progressing careers or even changing jobs. “The Learning Zone is always a great place to pick up information and ideas, for work or leisure. It’s a really good time to find out about courses starting in September as the new brochures will be out”, commented Coordinator, Louise Wilkinson. There will be a mixture of demonstrations every day which will give people an opportunity to have a go at something new, with quizzes and competitions there will also be plenty to keep the children entertained. As well as picking up information about learning opportunities from local providers, and some from further afield, Careers Wales West will also be present if people want advice and support about careers. As Careers Wales West, Local Training Providers, Pembrokeshire College and Pembrokeshire County Council’s 14-19 Department all have stands within the Learning Zone this is a good opportunity for school leavers to access impartial advice and guidance. Once in a lifetime opportunity for Pembrokeshire Film Club Pupils It cannot have escaped anybodies notice that Pembrokeshire has been awash with celebrities recently having had two blockbuster films filmed in the County during the past month. Both films have been shot at the same location in Freshwater West. The first to be filmed was the final film in the Harry Potter series and saw a full size shell house constructed on the beach. This month has also seen filming begin on ‘Nottingham’ a Ridley Scott production of Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe. Hundreds of extras have been recruited from Pembrokeshire to play soldiers giving Pembrokeshire people an opportunity to star in a film. 20 Pembrokeshire Film Club Pupils from Sir Thomas Picton, Ysgol Dewi Sant and Milford Haven schools were also given a unique opportunity to visit the set prior to filming. The trip was organised by Alastair Birch the Community Focussed Schools Officer and funded via the 14-19 Network. Steve Hart the location manager gave a talk to the pupils on his role as the location manager and the practicalities of making and producing a film of this size. Steve has a wealth of experience in the film industry working on some of the biggest films including ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. The visit concluded with the pupils being given a tour of the set. Pictured in front of one of the boats being constructed are the pupils who took part in the visit. Pictured right is part of the set that is completed and ready for filming. Jamie Bessant judge and Vocational Training Manager of the PRP Group commented “the students should be very proud of themselves. All of the dishes served by the students were of the highest quality and I would happily serve them on my a la carte menu at the Tudor Lodge Restaurant”. Jamie Bessant also added “the day was a complete success which would not have been possible without the help and support of staff and students from Greenhill, Pembroke and Milford Haven Schools; the staff of the Tudor Lodge Restaurant, Jameston; Leigh Evans of the Harbour Master in Milford Haven, Wisebuys; Andrew Rees, Mike Phillips for taking the time to judge the cooking competition, Gareth Mills from Pembrokeshire Local Educational Authority and finally the directors of the PRP Group Ltd for sponsoring the Cooking competition. We look forward to everyone’s support next year where the competition will be open to all secondary schools throughout Pembrokeshire.”
