Standards in Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects • The balance of text types Grade 4 8 12 Literary 50% 45% 30% Informational 50% 55% 70% 17 Literacy Complex Texts Shift 3 Regular practice with complex text and its academic vocabulary • Challenging Texts In brief, while reading demands in college, workforce training programs, and life in general have held steady or increased over the last half century, K–12 texts have actually declined in sophistication, and relatively little attention has been paid to students’ ability to read complex texts independently. • Academic Vocabulary • Close Reading 18 Literacy Evidence Shift 2 Reading and writing grounded in evidence from text • Text Based Questions Anchor Standards 1: Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. 19 Literacy Evidence Shift 2 Reading and writing grounded in evidence from text In “Casey at the Bat,” Casey strikes out. Describe a time Non text dependent when you failed at something. What makes Casey’s experiences at bat Text dependent humorous? In “The Gettysburg Address” Lincoln says the nation is dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Why is equality an important value to promote? “The Gettysburg Address” mentions the year 1776. According to Lincoln’s speech, why is this year significant to the events described in the speech? 20 Non text dependent Text dependent Now, back to how ELA teachers can change our world… It’s all in the shifts… Shift # 2 Requiring EVIDENCE grows minds and dispells stereotypes YOU are teaching students to question and to learn to provide justification for opinions When people have to support their claims with evidence it is much harder to cling to assumptions ….ELA teachers will change our world… Thank you! 23
