ASSESSMENT
WELCOME TO JEOPARDY!!!
 This
is only one Tier 1
strategy/intervention and not RtI
in its totality.
 What is “Discovery Session on
Environmental Strategies for All
Students”?
 RtI
allows teachers to work with
students in a meaningful way to
prevent what and to close what.
 What is “problems” and “the
gap”?
 RtI
allows classroom teachers to
do something what with students
who do not make sufficient
progress.
 What is “different”?
 These
intended recipients must
get good teaching at Tier 1 before
moving into Tier 2 or 3.
 Who are “all students”?
 The
percentage of students who
should be successful at the Tier 1
level.
 What is “80-90%”?
 These
two questions posed by R.
Dufour are particularly relevant to
the RtI philosophy.
 What are “questions 3 & 4”?
(How will we respond when some students
do not learn? How will we respond when
some students have already learned?
Pyramid Response to Intervention
Tier 1 + Tier 2 +
= Tier 3
The remaining
1 - 5%
INTENSIVE
of students need all 3
Tiers to be successful
Intensive, individualized
interventions for students who have an insufficient
response to evidence-based interventions in the first two tiers
Tier 1 +
_______________
= Tier 2
TARGETED
Targeted, specific prevention or remediation interventions for
students whose academic performance or behavior lag
behind the norm for proficiency in their
grade and educational setting
Tier 1
___________________________
UNIVERSAL
High-quality instructional and behavioral supports for all
students to reach proficiency in general education
An additional
10 - 15%
of students are
successful
80 - 90%
of students are
successful
Understanding Response to Intervention
– Howell, Patton, Deiotte, 2008
Essential Components
 High
quality classroom instruction
 Tiered instruction and intervention
 Ongoing student assessment
 Family involvement
Tier 1
 Identification
at Tier 1,2,3
 Categorization
 Critical analysis
 What are the issues?
 Strategies
Examples…
1.
2.
Inclusion audit identifies that bullying is an
issue. Social skills programs are
considered a tier 1 strategy, so need to find
a research-based social skills program to
help with your bullying issue.
Consistent classroom data shows that the
whole class is struggling. We know that 8090% of the class should be doing well, so a
data-based decision would be to change tier
1 strategies/interventions.
Tier 1 Implementation Plan
Must have…
 Constant
monitoring and data
gathering to know if students are
or aren’t learning
 School-based framework
 Responsibilities outlined

What additional support do you need from
division personnel?


What do you need and what personnel do
you need to do it?

Where are you (the school) now?

What does your school need to try or explore
next?

I will try the following as a result of what I
heard today…
