Orientation for New Site Visitors
The Accreditation Process
Introduction
This presentation provides a brief overview of CIDA’s
accreditation process. Before participating in a site
visit, you should also review CIDA’s Accreditation
Policy and Procedure, Site Visitor Handbook, and
attend an in-person training workshop.

Program Inquiry
 CIDA accreditation is voluntary and programs must
contact CIDA to begin the process.
 CIDA staff acts in an advisory capacity to programs
seeking information about accreditation and programs
going through the process.
 CIDA staff provides support to programs during the
self-study process.

Program Self-study
 In preparation for an on-site review, a program must
complete an intensive self-study process.
 CIDA’s Accreditation Policy and Procedure includes
‘Guidance for Self-Study’, which encourages programs
to develop regular and effective methods for self-study
and provides guidance for organizing this effort.

Application for Accreditation
 Programs must meet eligibility requirements before
they can apply to seek accreditation (see CIDA’s
Accreditation Policy and Procedure, Section IV,
Applying for Accreditation).
 Programs must submit an application for accreditation
1-2 years in advance of the intended site visit dates.
 Along with the application, programs must submit
documentation of eligibility to seek CIDA accreditation.

The Program Analysis Report
Programs must complete a Program Analysis Report:
 Communicates the results of a program’s self-study
 Includes institutional and program data
 Addresses program strengths and weaknesses
 Provides analysis of the program's compliance with
CIDA Standards

The Site Visit
 CIDA sends a visiting team composed of interior design
educators and practitioners onsite to review the
program.
 This visiting team determines whether the program is
in compliance with CIDA’s Professional Standards by
reviewing student work, learning experiences provided
by the program, and program facilities.

Visiting Team Report
The CIDA team writes the Visiting Team Report:
 Introductory questionnaire
 Analysis of program compliance with each Standard
 Check boxes for expectations
 Concluding analysis
 Recommendation for accreditation

After a Site Visit
 The VTR is due in the CIDA office one week after the
site visit.
 The VTR goes through an extensive editing process that
involves CIDA staff and members of the Accreditation
Commission.
 The visiting team is asked to respond to staff and
Commission questions about report content.

Program Response to VTR
 After the VTR is edited, it is sent to the program for
review.
 The program has an opportunity to correct factual
errors, address content concerns, and discuss plans for
improvement.
 When necessary, the visiting team responds to the
program’s response and this information is appended
to the VTR.

CIDA Report Reviewers
 VTRs are sent to groups of trained CIDA site visitors for
review.
 Site visitor comments are forwarded to the
Accreditation Commission and help to ensure
consistency in decision-making.

The Accreditation Decision
 The Accreditation Commission makes final decisions on
accreditation.
 The Commission considers all evidence collected
throughout the accreditation process.
 Decisions made by the Commission are fair and
impartial.
 All decisions are supported by evidence gathered
throughout the accreditation process and kept on file
in the CIDA office.
