SUMMARY QUESTIONS
Summary Questions are like extended Info /Own Words Questions.
You are asked to read an extended section of text and summarise its
issues /concerns.
This again involves you identifying the key points and converting
them into your OWN WORDS
Keep your answer focused upon the main/key issues and concerns.
Don’t get sidetracked by extra superfluous details.
Your answer should take the form of A PARAGRAPH OF FORMAL
CONTINUOUS PROSE. HOWEVER YOU MAY USE BULLET POINTS
AND THIS MAY HELP TO ENSURE YOUR IDEAS DONT OVERLAP
OR REPEAT THEMSELVES.
REMEMBER THE DEPTH OF YOUR ANSWER IS GOVERNED BY
THE AMOUNT OF MARKS AVAILABLE.(usually 3-6 marks)
RECOGNITION OF SUMMARY QUESTIONS
SUMMARISE THE KEY CONCERNS/ISSSUES/POINTS PRESENT
IN LINES X-Y
SUMMARISE THE KEY BENEFITS/PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED
WITH THIS IN LINES X-Y
IN YOUR OWN WORDS AS FAR AS POSSIBLE GIVE X
REASONS WHY THE WRITER …
SUMMARISE WHAT THESE ISSUES/CONCERNS /BENEFITS
/PROBLEMS ARE...
SUGGESTED APPROACH
Mark off the section of text given in line reference
Read section of text closely. Look out for any key words present here which
were evident in the question. These are your markers that you are in the
correct section of text. If the area of text is more extensive and covers a
number of paragraphs consider the following:
a) Pay close attention to the TOPIC SENTENCES OF EACH PARAGRAPH
b) Consider previous “Own Words” answers. Are they relevant to the
question? Could they be recycled and incorporated into your
answer?
As you identify each point within the text highlight it and number it.
Remember the number of points you are looking for will depend on the marks
avail eg 3 points for 3 marks and so on. Range: 3-6 marks
The SQA PREFER A PARAGRAPH OF FORMAL CONTINOUS PROSE BUT
YOU MAY BE RUNNING OUT OF TIME...
Alternatively bullet point each response CONVERTING IT INTO YOUR
OWN WORDS SO THAT YOUR ANSWER RETAINS THE SAME GIST OF
MEANING AS THE INITIAL TEXT.
