SUMMARY QUESTIONS Summary Questions are like extended Info /Own Words Questions. You are asked to read an extended section of text and summarise its issues /concerns. This again involves you identifying the key points and converting them into your OWN WORDS Keep your answer focused upon the main/key issues and concerns. Don’t get sidetracked by extra superfluous details. Your answer should take the form of A PARAGRAPH OF FORMAL CONTINUOUS PROSE. HOWEVER YOU MAY USE BULLET POINTS AND THIS MAY HELP TO ENSURE YOUR IDEAS DONT OVERLAP OR REPEAT THEMSELVES. REMEMBER THE DEPTH OF YOUR ANSWER IS GOVERNED BY THE AMOUNT OF MARKS AVAILABLE.(usually 3-6 marks) RECOGNITION OF SUMMARY QUESTIONS SUMMARISE THE KEY CONCERNS/ISSSUES/POINTS PRESENT IN LINES X-Y SUMMARISE THE KEY BENEFITS/PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS IN LINES X-Y IN YOUR OWN WORDS AS FAR AS POSSIBLE GIVE X REASONS WHY THE WRITER … SUMMARISE WHAT THESE ISSUES/CONCERNS /BENEFITS /PROBLEMS ARE... SUGGESTED APPROACH Mark off the section of text given in line reference Read section of text closely. Look out for any key words present here which were evident in the question. These are your markers that you are in the correct section of text. If the area of text is more extensive and covers a number of paragraphs consider the following: a) Pay close attention to the TOPIC SENTENCES OF EACH PARAGRAPH b) Consider previous “Own Words” answers. Are they relevant to the question? Could they be recycled and incorporated into your answer? As you identify each point within the text highlight it and number it. Remember the number of points you are looking for will depend on the marks avail eg 3 points for 3 marks and so on.
