LOUIS PERRON, Ph.D.
Vice-doyen
Coordonnateur des études supérieures
Esprit
There are a few things to keep track of and it is ultimately the
student’s responsibility to make sure that she or he is
following the program properly.
---BUT---
Vous n’êtes pas seuls.
Nous sommes là pour vous aider.
Survol—Overview
Deux guides sont disponibles pour nos
étudiantes et étudiants des études
supérieures.
Certificat d’études supérieures
en éthique publique
Graduate Certificate in Public Ethics
(2 sections; 2 annexes)
&
Maîtrise ès arts en éthique publique
Master of Arts in Public Ethics
(8 sections; 2 annexes)
philosophie.
The other sections concern specific topics for specific
programs as well as the forms that you will eventually
have to fill out.
Toutes les modifications ou mises à jour des règlements
scolaires sont effectuées sur les pages web de la Faculté

Some things to keep in mind
-Course and program changes
----dropping courses, request for deferments,
important dates
- Withdrawal from courses with refund
- Registration (No registration = no final mark)
- Program Requirements –RESIDENCE—
- Examinations and Grading
- Deferred Evaluation
- Revisions and Appeals
There is a big difference between undergraduate &
graduate studies--- (MINDSET)
----------------INDEPENDENCE--------------
Undergraduate:
--Attend classes from September-April
--May-August – SUMMER BREAK
Graduate:
--Attend classes from September-April
--May-August – RESEARCH SEASON
Les étudiants inscrits à une session
(automne, hiver ou printemps/été) ont
accès aux services de l’Université; ils
peuvent suivre des cours, ou recevoir
des conseils des professeurs, du
directeur de thèse ou du superviseur
de recherche (mémoire).
Pas d’inscription, pas de droits
d’accès aux services de l’Université!
KEEP IN MIND THAT WHEN YOU
ARE ENROLLED…
…your supervisor is available throughout
the year for consultation.
However, a professor’s duties vary
throughout the year.
Professorial Life – in general-SEPTEMBER-APRIL
--Teaching
--Administrative duties
--Research/writing
MAY-AUGUST
--Conferences/travel
--Research/writing—RESEARCH SEASON
--Course preparation
--Holidays
A Little Friendly Advice:
---Take advantage of the “summer session,”
but, think of it as the RESEARCH SEASON.
---Work out a meeting schedule with your
supervisor.
---Budget your time--set up a timeline.
Let us consider two examples of a timeline.
First—Thesis Route and Second—Research Paper
SEPT 2008: START PROGRAM (Thesis)
COMPLETELY FINISHED BY: April 30, 2010
April 16—April 30, 2010: Revisions to Thesis
April 15, 2010: Thesis Defense
March 15—April 15, 2010: Thesis Jury Reads Thesis
March 2—March 14, 2010: Faculty of Graduate Studies
Approves Readers for Thesis
March 1, 2010: Submit Thesis
January & February, 2010 – Polish the Thesis Drafts
Summer & Fall 2009: Research & Write First Draft
Fall 2008—Spring 2009: Coursework, formulate ideas, talk
to your supervisor and draft a thesis proposal.
SEPT 2008: START PROGRAM (Research paper)
COMPLETELY FINISHED BY: April 30, 2010
April 16—April 30, 2010: Revisions to Research Paper
April 15, 2010: Research Paper Returned
March 15—April 15, 2010: Research Paper Evaluated
March 15, 2010: Submit Research Paper
January & February, 2010 – Polish the Research Paper Drafts
Summer & Fall 2009: Research & Write First Draft
Fall 2008—Spring 2009: Coursework, formulate ideas, talk
to your supervisor and construct your approach to the Research Paper
Consider that when completed,
a Thesis or Research Paper
is placed in the SPU Library.
It becomes part of the
ongoing scholarly tradition.
IT BECOMES A PUBLICALLY AVAILABLE DOCUMENT;
FUTURE RESEARCHERS WILL LIKELY CONSULT IT.
SO, WE HAVE ANOTHER DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE WORK.
Graduate Student Life
Twofold
Quiet Scholarly Side
---concentrating on your coursework
---reading and thinking in the library
---hunching over a computer thinking and writing
---meeting with your supervisor
BUT—there is another side.
Graduate Student Life
also has a PUBLIC SIDE
(Another difference between grads and undergrads.)
A graduate student greatly benefits
by participating in the ‘life of the faculty.’
If nobody participates, then no ‘life of the faculty.’
5 Ways to Participate (at least…)
Graduate Student Life: PUBLIC SIDE
1. Attend the Faculty’s Conferences
October 17/18 – Ethics & Terrorism
November 7/8 – Religion, Politics & Society
2. At the Faculty’s Conferences:
Chair a session/Introduce Speakers
Comment on a paper
Present a Paper—Share your research
3. Attend the Faculty’s Guest Speaker’s Talk
November 14: Dr. Thorp, Dept. Chair—UWO
-------others will be announced later on -------If there is someone you would like us to bring in
as a speaker, contact us.
Graduate Student Life: PUBLIC SIDE
4. Graduate Student Driven Courses
GOT AN IDEA FOR A COURSE?
-----LET US KNOW-------------MAYBE WE CAN OFFER IT---You find at least SIX graduate students committed
to taking the course (we’ll help) and we will try
to find a professor to run it. (4 Months Notice)
FOR EXAMPLE
May-June—2008--------UTILITARIANISM
Graduate Student Life: PUBLIC SIDE
Last—but not least...
5. LAST, BUT NOT LEAST
------Faculty of Philosophy’s E-Journal—
The Journal
Submit Papers---Help Review Papers---Help with Editing
Help with Website Duties---Order Books---Bookreviews
In Sum:
Read the student guide carefully
and make sure you’re on track.
Budget your time.
Don’t hesitate to ask questions.
We’re here to help.
Live and enjoy both sides of a unique experience
