Day 6 Wikipedia
Intro
Let’s go over the pro’s and con’s of using
Wikipedia as a resource
wiki (IPA: <WICK-ee> or <WEE-kee>)
1.
2.
In the Hawaiian language, the word "wiki" means
"quick"
Any website based on any kind of Wiki software which
enables users to quickly add to, edit and delete from the
site's content.
•
Wiki What?
Wikipedia
• 3 heads are better than 1
• Wikipedia: 2,025,000+ English articles
• There, their, or they’re?
• Correct mistakes easily (and indulge your
inner OCD grammarian)
• Free at last!
• Encourage democratic web content
• Many wiki sites are free
Why Wiki?
• Anyone can create a Wiki
• Website options
•
•

www.wetpaint.com
www.pbwiki.com
www.wikidot.com
More than just Wikipedia
• Be careful when using Wikipedia
• Anyone can edit
• Not the most reliable source
• Wikipedia’s Communication Officer said:
• “"Wikipedia is a great resource for students to get a good
overview of a topic, but it should not be cited in papers or
exams since it is not an authoritative source," said Sandy
Ordonez.
Wiki-weary
• Wikipedia is great for finding a quick answer
• Do not use Wikipedia as a source for official document
• School Paper
• Work Report
• Wiki’s can be great options if you are interested in
creating a website
• You can use Wikipedia to find basic information for a
source that might help you determine more key words for
a search of reliable resources
